Grants Pass has been a main attraction in Southern Oregon for decades. But what makes it so special? Why do people from all over the world come to this city, of all places?
First, it is important to know a little bit about Grants Pass’ history. Grants Pass is now located where a tribe known as the River Takilma people once occupied. However, in 1853, they were forcibly removed from the area and relocated to the Siletz Reservation on the Central Oregon Coast. Resettlers then built a stagecoach stop on the Portland - Sacramento route. Grants Pass History states that "Grants Pass was named in honor of General U.S. Grant’s 1863 victory at Vicksburg, Originally Grant’s Pass, the apostrophe was dropped after 1900." It later became a railhead when the Oregon - California Railroad (Now the Southern Pacific) was completed in 1884.
Grants Pass quickly became popular for its resources and scenery, with the slogan “It’s the Climate”. According to the Oregon Encyclopedia, tourist rates have been growing in Grants Pass ever since the National Monument, known as the Oregon Caves, was discovered close by in 1874. “twenty-four miles southwest of Grants Pass, ... the caves’ designation as a National Monument in 1909 led to commercial tours to the site beginning in 1922.” Today, the city has more than 39,000 residents. Living in Grants Pass describes Grants Pass as "a beautiful river town with much to explore!... From our exceptional dining to remarkable shops, we offer luxury. From our quaint town to friendly people, we radiate charm." Grants Pass perfectly captures the essence of Oregon’s beauty, with abundant trees and inflorescences of flowers, matched with the captivating rivers and lakes dispersed through and around the city.
For anyone wondering where some of the most beautiful places in Grants Pass are, hiking trails are some of the best. A few great examples are Rainy Falls, Cathedral Hills, Sky Crest Trail Head. These hiking trails have exceptional views, packed full of colorful foliage and beautiful wildlife. Grants Pass visitors and residents alike visit these places countless times throughout the year. Hiking in Grants Pass is an experience that one can never truly forget.
