Between the mid 90's and through the 2010's, Kanye West was one of the most prolific hip-hop artists. His work changed the way that hip-hop sounds today. Kanye started producing music for local Chicago artists in 2001, helping with Jay-Z’s The Blueprint. He was signed onto Roc-A-Fella Records that same year, producing and releasing The College Dropout in 2004. One song, from the album Slow Jamz, hit the 100th spot on Billboard Hot-100, really stating how popular he got in such a small amount of time. Over the years, Kanye kept producing generational albums, including Late Registration, Graduation, 808s & Heartbreak, MBaDTF, Watch the Throne, Yeezus, The Life of Pablo, and Ye. All of these are considered part of Kanye's "generational 9 album run", placing Kanye as one of the best rappers and producers of the 2000s and 2010s.
Kanye West married Kim Kardashian in Apr. 2012. They would have a total of four children. According to NBC News, in 2020, the married couple divorced over Kanye’s political views. After this tragic divorce, in Oct. 2021, Kanye West legally changed his name to ‘Ye’, and many say this is when his downfall truly started. At this point, Ye released Donda, an album about how Kanye became Ye. This album was not taken well, with critics giving it an average of 54% and leaving fans disappointed. On Dec. 1, 2022, Ye went on InfoWars, Alex Jones show. He went on anonymously, though mid-way through the interview, he took the mask off and said: “Every human being has something of value that they brought to the table, especially Hitler.” Later in the radio show, Alex Jones mentioned how he disliked Nazis., As he said that, listeners could hear Ye saying, “I like Hitler” right before an ad break. Fans were outraged after this happened, with many news outlets broadcasting the story out to the world.
In 2024, Ye and Ty Dolla released two back-to-back albums, Vultures 1 and Vultures 2. Both of these albums were extremely hated by fans on release, with Ye showing production value dropping and even rumors of AI being used in the production studio. After this happened, Ye’s ex-manager released a statement on Twitter, stating that Ye had been on Nitrous Oxide that he got from his dentist. Ye later released a series of texts from his ex-manager, saying that Ye had two options: either to have a serious talk with him without cussing or: “I have you institutionalized again where they medicate the crap out of you, and go back to Zombieland forever.”
Ye was somewhat quiet for a couple of months, only periodically making small tweets. All went down in Feb. on Twitter, where Ye went on multiple rants, stating his extreme views, mostly towards Jewish people and how he was a self-proclaimed Nazi. Some tweets include “I’m a Nazi”, “I love Hitler” and “Free Puff Daddy”, referring to famous rapper P Diddy, who held parties where he sex trafficked women. According to NBC News, he also mentioned having “dominion over his wife”, mentioning “This ain’t no woke feminist ----”. During this rant, his clothing website, yeezy.com, had a shirt with a swastika on it, which Ye promoted in a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl. “I spent, like, all the money for the commercial on these new teeth,” he said, while sitting in a dentist's chair. According to The New York Times, Yeezy.com was shut down, replaced by a message saying “This store is unavailable.”
Overall, Kanye West’s decline is truly generational. It does not seem that there has been someone falling off this hard in the past 50 years. Kanye West could have been one of the greatest, most influential figures in music history, but money and fame get to people's heads. One quote really summarizes Kanye’s fall : “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” - The Dark Knight, 2008.
