GPHS has been honored to be selected as one of only 16 high schools across the nation to receive the prestigious Unsinkable Molly Brown Grant. This grant program has distributed a total of $160,000 among various high school theatre programs, enabling them to produce and perform the beloved Meredith Willson musical. The announcement of this grant took place in 2023 and represents a collaborative effort among the Educational Theatre Foundation, The Music Man Foundation, and Music Theatre International. The Unsinkable Molly Brown Grant aims to empower high school theatre programs by providing them with essential resources and funding. This initiative encourages schools to engage not only their students but also educators and the broader community. By fostering these connections, the program seeks to enhance the educational experience of students involved in the performing arts, promote creativity, and strengthen community ties through shared cultural experiences. Through this grant, GPHS will have the opportunity to inspire and entertain audiences while developing vital skills in drama and performance.

Molly's attempts to navigate the complexities of high society in Denver were met with resistance and prejudice, yet she refused to be confined by the expectations of the upper crust. Instead, she turned their world upside down through her bold actions and unconventional views. She championed labor rights, often advocating for the miners who struggled under harsh conditions, and used her platform to stand up for those who had little power. Her travels across Europe opened her eyes to various cultures and social issues, further enriching her perspectives on life and philanthropy. However, it was the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912 that showcased her true character. As a survivor, Molly demonstrated exceptional courage, helping others to safety in the lifeboats, which solidified her status as a heroine. From her humble beginnings to the heights of wealth, Molly Brown actively confronted major social issues and consistently looked out for those in need. By utilizing her resources and vibrant personality, she embodied the spirit of compassion and resilience, ensuring that her motto of "Share the Luck" remained a guiding principle in her life and legacy.

GPHS sophmore Kallie Weiss takes on multiple roles in the show, portraying Nelva, a lively Can Can dancer, a member of the Sacred Elite, and Woman 7. She passionately encourages people to attend the performance, emphasizing that it is not only fun and upbeat but also captivating to watch, with valuable morals and messages woven throughout the narrative. In her view, the essence of the show can be captured in a single word: “heartwarming.” The play conveys a powerful message about the importance of determination, illustrating that with perseverance, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams, no matter the challenges they face. Weiss particularly enjoys the charming country accents featured in the production, which add an authentic and entertaining flair to the characters and the overall experience.

GPHS sophomore Lillian Thompson embraces a diverse range of roles in the production, portraying Baby Doe Tabor, Mimi, and a Sacred Elite. Among the lines of the show, the one that sticks out to her the most is “Horace!!!” due to its comedic timing and delivery, which always elicits laughter. Thompson passionately encourages others to attend the show, highlighting its unique blend of historical narratives and lively choreography. She believes that the musical not only entertains but also educates audiences about events and figures with which they may not be familiar. Her admiration for the character of Molly is particularly strong; she appreciates Molly's tenacity and determination. Thompson feels that Molly’s unwavering spirit to overcome challenges and achieve her goals serves as an inspiring testament to perseverance. What makes this musical truly distinct from others is its deep and intricate storytelling. Unlike many productions, it delves into the life of the characters before the tragedy unfolds, allowing the audience to invest emotionally in their journeys.
