The Common App

By Abe J. Selvas

The holidays are here everyone... A time filled with joy, cheer, family values, and stressed-out seniors, scrambling to figure out what they need to accomplish to get into college or just graduate high school. If you are planning to jump into anything else other than college--well-- I don't have much to offer you this month besides my Job Listings column in the Student Resources tab (shameless self-promotion? Probably, but this is my column, so there). This month, I will be walking you, Scroll readers, through the slight complexity known as the Common Application.

Above you can see a senior in a his natural state of stress.

From this page, just locate the blue "Add a college" button and click on it. It will take you to a page with a search bar where you can type in the colleges you plan on applying to. From there, you can add them to your "Dashboard" with the little blue plus buttons.

For those of you unaware of what the Common App is, it is a gift from the gods to students looking to apply to various institutes of education without the struggle of inputting the same information over and over again. To begin, you must first create an account, and for the majority of you, this will be a "First Year Students" account. Fill out the indicated fields accordingly and create the account. This should take you to a screen similar to the one below.

Note: It is important to know that not all colleges accept the Common App.

After you have added all the colleges you desire, you can click on the "Common App" tab and begin filling out your information appropriately. This part is quite lengthy, but it is much better than filling all of it out multiple times on different college applications. After you have finished with the ridiculously long process of typing in all your information, you can move over to the "Dashboard" tab. Once you are here, you can see what the Common App requires for submissions to your desired colleges. You can finish up these additional requirements in the "My Colleges" tab by clicking on the individual colleges. Finish up the requirements, and then hit that '"Review and Submit - Common App". Boom! You have submitted your applications to your dream colleges! Once again, remember to use the other form at the bottom of the page to provide some feedback.

Until next month, work hard-- and good luck!
