Famous Artists

Banksy

Banksy is a graffiti artist born on July 28, 1974. He is believed to be born in Bristol, England, but everything is all assumptions due to the anonymity of Banksy's identity. His art pieces were first noticed around the 1990's, typically in black and white format. They brought to light controversial issues happening in the world and are Banksy's way of sharing stories through images, which really sparks conversation. Through the simplicity and impact of his work, the art that is made by him stands out amongst so many others.

Banksy has always been one of my favorite artists. Being someone who has never liked being in the limelight, but always adored making an impact in the world, Banksy is truly living my dream. Graffiti has always been a medium that had some bad connotations backing it up. It had affiliations to what some may call "bad people", and it was labeled as bad art, with vandalism being illegal today. Although art is subjective, most people can find something to like about Banksy and his art.

"love is in the bin," after the shredding

One of the most notable pieces that was done by Banksy was created back in 2018, called "love is in the bin." It featured his most famous art piece, "Girl With Balloon," placed in a frame. During auction, it was shredded. This piece resonated with manny other individuals, considering that is was auctioned off at roughly 25 million dollars, but what sticks out most about this piece is the rebellion against social norms that went into creating this piece, along with the creativity to actually pull this off. Shredding your own original piece while it is being sold is something that really takes courage, which shows the deep personality we are able to see with Banksy.

Christina quarles

An amazing painter and one of my most favorite artists of all time, Christina Quarles, stems her drive for her art from her own experiences of living in a body that is not always legible within the heteronormative, patriarchal, white, Western ideals that structure her daily life, particularly as a queer woman born to a White mother and a Black father. In terms of technique, her avid experimentation and focus on transfiguring the material terrain of the canvas connects her with such predecessors as late American artist Jack Whitten. Intersecting color, texture, and layers, the resulting works are more akin to relief sculpture than conventional painting, a material outcome that further underscores her themes of embodiment and experience for both the artist and the viewer. One of the most powerful elements of her art is its potential to position people in a conversation they did not know was theirs to explore.
