Writing

This year D79 is focusing on these 6 key questions related to writing instruction. The questions were developed with Advanced Literacies, NYC Supportive Environment Framework, and the NYSED CR-SE Framework all in mind.

Our goal is that all teachers utilize highly effective instructional practices and can answer "yes" to these questions as they deliver writing instruction. Planning and delivering instruction with these questions in mind will improve both student engagement and achievement.

Did the teacher provide students with instruction and support so that they could utilize graphic organizers to: 1) produce writing aligned to the goals of the unit, and 2) address their individual needs and/or learning styles?

Did the teacher assign students to write in response to texts students are reading in class?

Did the teacher explicitly encourage, support and require the use of targeted unit vocabulary and other content vocabulary in student writing?

Did the teacher utilize established routines to support writing in the classroom that provide students with clear expectations and criteria for writing tasks?

Did the teacher make clear connections and provide students with opportunities to connect the current lesson to a culminating unit project?

Did the teacher use writing as a method for students to connect their own knowledge and experience before, during and after reading texts?
