Q&A
Question 1. Why are mango trees so short?
Advantages: 1. Easy to harvest 2. Safer during harvesting
Disadvantages: 1. Low yield
Question 2. How are mangoes harvested?
1. Previously, they were picked when 60-70% ripe and allowed to ripen further. However, due to an oversupply of mangoes in Tainan one year, they were dumped in the Zengwen River.
Therefore, mangoes in Fangshan are harvested after they are fully ripe on the tree. However, this can lead to insect infestations (Oriental fruit fly), so the mangoes are bagged to prevent Oriental fruit fly infestation.
Q&A
Question 1. Climate Requirements for Mangoes
Temperature: Optimal temperature is 25-27°C. Growth stagnates below 15°C and ceases below 10°C. Both excessive heat and cold will affect pollen viability.
Sunlight: Sufficient sunlight is needed to promote flower bud differentiation.
Drought/Humidity: Dry winters are beneficial for flowering differentiation, while warm and humid conditions are preferred during the growing season.
Soil: Well-drained sandy loam or loam with a low water table and a pH of 5.5-7.0 is best.
Question 2. What are Capsule Mangoes?
"Capsule" refers to the mango fruit itself, the result of the mango tree's flowering and maturation. The Irwin, Golden Emperor, and Summer Snow varieties we commonly eat are mango capsules of different varieties. These are tropical fruits, rich in Vitamin A, and are typically abundant in Taiwan during spring and summer. Professional cultivation involves fruit thinning to ensure nutrient concentration and produce high-quality mangoes; for example, only one fruit is left per cluster.

Q&A
Question 1. Where are most of the mangoes from Fangshan sold? Are they only sold in Taiwan?
To sell them to South Korea or Japan, the mangoes need to be sterilized at high temperatures, but this alters the flavor. Therefore, most of the mangoes are grown domestically in Taiwan, attracting both domestic and international tourists.
Question 2. How are pests and diseases prevented?
The mangoes are wrapped in fruit bags. For the Oriental fruit fly, the scent of the female fly attracts the male fly to a container before further processing. Some pesticides are also used to treat the mangoes.

Q&A
Question 1. What is the Oriental Fruit Fly? Mango flowers have low attraction for bees but are extremely attractive to flies. Farmers often use minced meat or soybean powder during the flowering period to attract flies, increasing pollination rates and thus improving yield and fruit quality. The cost of fruit flies is also cheaper than renting Mifeng.
Question 2. What type of terrain is suitable for mangoes? Fangshan mangoes are grown on hillsides facing the sea and backed by mountains, which have the advantages of strong sunlight, strong sea breezes, and good drainage. The unique downhill winds inhibit the growth of branches and leaves, concentrating nutrients and creating a top-quality taste with chewy flesh and extremely high sweetness.
