It is necessary to supplement with lime or magnesia lime to neutralize the acidity, and add more organic matter to improve fertility.
The best properties are achieved by maintaining basic crop rotation and physical loosening.
Coastal areas need to pay attention to drainage to prevent salt damage, while inland areas need to strengthen water management to avoid soil cracking or excessive compaction
Pingtung Irwin mangoes thrive best in well-drained soil, with the following key conditions:
* Soil: Sandy loam or gravelly sloping soil is ideal. The Fangshan and Shizitou areas of Pingtung are predominantly gravelly, which prevents waterlogging at the roots, improving fruit sweetness and preventing cracking.
* pH: The ideal pH is between 5.5 and 7.5. A slightly acidic environment is most conducive to mineral absorption.
* Trace elements: The weathered soil and rock of Pingtung's hillsides are rich in calcium, boron, and magnesium, contributing to firm flesh and a rich aroma.
Fangshan in Pingtung also has natural soil with three major advantages: dryness, breathability, and rich minerals.
Fangshan is characterized by gravelly, weathered soil nestled between mountains and the sea. The soil layers are mixed with a large amount of gravel and sand, resulting in a loose structure that provides excellent aeration and drainage. Even after heavy summer rains, the soil dries quickly, preventing waterlogging at the roots and forcing the fruit to accumulate sugar and aroma. Furthermore, the weathering of the rock layers releases abundant minerals such as calcium, boron, and manganese, providing natural nutrients to the tree and resulting in firm, chewy flesh and a vibrant red color.
This unique "water-filtering mineral soil," combined with strong mountain winds and ample sunshine, contributes to the premium status of Fangshan mangoes, known for their sweet and rich flavor.
Tainan (Yujing, Nanxi, Nanhua): Known as the "Hometown of Mangoes." The terrain is mostly hilly, with slopes providing excellent drainage (mangoes are highly susceptible to waterlogging at the roots), and the soil is mostly sandstone and shale alluvial soil, rich in minerals.
Pingtung (Fangshan, Shizi, Fangliao): This region has the earliest mango season in Taiwan. Its low latitude, high temperatures, and unique **"sunset winds"** result in bright red skin and chewy flesh. Although the soil here has a higher salt content, its good permeability is ideal for Irwin mangoes.
Kaohsiung (Liugui): Famous for its "Golden Emperor Mangoes," this region boasts a warm environment and abundant sunshine.
