The reason why Pingtung mangoes stand out is closely related to their choice of hillside planting. Here are three main reasons why they are suitable.
1. Excellent drainage: Mangoes cannot tolerate waterlogging at the base. The natural slope of hillsides ensures that rainwater drains quickly, preventing the soil from becoming too wet and causing root rot. This is especially important during the summer thunderstorms that are prevalent in Pingtung.
2. Ample Sunlight and Ventilation: The sloping terrain reduces shading between plants, allowing each fruit to receive sufficient sunlight, promoting a vibrant deep red skin color and significantly increasing flesh sweetness. Good air circulation also reduces the likelihood of pests and diseases.
3. Abiotic Stress Effect: The soil layer on slopes is relatively thin and infertile compared to flat land. This moderate stress stimulates mango trees to concentrate their energy on flowering and fruiting, resulting in a richer flavor and firmer flesh.
The unique topography of hillsides provides an excellent growing environment for high-value crops. Firstly, the natural slope provides excellent drainage, effectively preventing waterlogging and suffocation at the roots, ensuring healthy root respiration, and significantly reducing the likelihood of pests and diseases.
Secondly, hillsides offer ample sunlight and ventilation. Sunny slopes extend the photosynthetic period, while good air circulation quickly removes excess moisture, regulates plant temperature, and creates a cleaner growing environment.
The most crucial factor is the "adversity stress effect." The larger diurnal temperature range and environmental fluctuations on hillsides stimulate the survival instincts of crops, leading to the conversion and accumulation of more sugars, polyphenols, and aromatic substances. This moderate environmental stress is the secret weapon for enhancing the mellowness of tea and the sweetness of fruit, making hillsides a cradle for producing high-quality crops.
Fangshan is suitable for growing mangoes mainly because of its abundant sunshine, hot climate, well-drained sandy soil, and unique mountain breezes. These conditions combine to create Fangshan mangoes that are sweet, fragrant, and have a chewy texture, making it one of the earliest mango-producing regions in Taiwan.
In addition, the unique mountain breezes in the area further enhance the sweetness and rich color of the mangoes.
Irwin mangoes require a hot and humid climate to grow, and Fangshan Township in Pingtung County, located on the Hengchun Peninsula in southern Taiwan, has long hours of sunshine, high temperatures, and abundant rainfall, making it the most ideal growing environment for Irwin mangoes.
