Late Summer to Autumn (August-October): This season is dominated by the Kate (September mango), known for its large size and long shelf life.
Taiwan boasts a rich mango season, available from late spring to late autumn.
Early Spring (April-May): The season kicks off with the locally grown mangoes, evoking sweet and sour childhood memories.
Midsummer (May-July): The peak season arrives with the popular Irwin mango, followed by the large, ripe Golden Emperor mango, the Yuwen mango (combining the best of both), and the premium Summer Snow mango, with its distinctive local aroma.
With different varieties in succession, Taiwan can enjoy the sweet aroma of mangoes for up to six months.
If you want to taste the earliest ripening and most flavorful Irwin mangoes in Taiwan, you absolutely cannot miss Fangshan in Pingtung. This area is not only a pioneering production area for Irwin mangoes in Taiwan, but also, due to its unique geographical environment, it has cultivated a "caramel aroma" that is difficult to imitate elsewhere.
Fangshan mangoes are famous primarily due to the unique **three geographical features** of the Hengchun Peninsula:
The Tempering Effect of Mountain Winds: Strong mountain winds remove moisture from the fruit's surface, sometimes causing slight abrasion marks on the peel (making the fruit less delicate than that of Yujing fruit), but resulting in firmer, more bouncy flesh.
The Saltiness of Sea Breezes: Fangshan orchards are mostly located on hillsides, where they are constantly exposed to sea breezes containing trace elements and salt. This natural "fertilizer" not only enhances the sweetness of the fruit but also gives it a unique and rich aroma.
Intense Sunshine: The abundant sunshine and warm climate here allow Fangshan Irwin fruit to enter its harvest season about a month earlier than Tainan Yujing fruit (around late April to June).
Late April: Early-flowering mangoes begin to appear on the market in small quantities. At this time, the fruit is relatively precious and the price is high.
Mid-May to the end of June: Peak production period. This is the time when yields are most stable, the fruit is ripest and sweetest, and it's also the best time to purchase and send gift boxes.
Early July: The harvest season is coming to an end. As the production area moves north to Tainan, the harvest in Fangshan will gradually come to a close.
