Op Art Shading Blobs

Students used Line and Value to create the illusion of Form in their artwork. We also reviewed the color wheel and color relationships based on their place on the color wheel. Students chose from either an analogous, triadic, warm, cool, or complementary color scheme for their shading.

Basquiat Mixed Media Art

Jean-Michele Basquiat

December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988

Basquiat was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement.

Basquiat's art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. He used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the Black community of his time, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. His visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle.

Fourth grade students learned about Basquiat by reading the book "Radiant Child", the story of young artist Jean-Michele Basquiat. Then, they came up with their own stories to create a work of art in the style of Basquiat. Students were asked to answer the following questions:

Who is your main character?

What is your main character's origin story?

What is the setting of your story?

What are some details of your setting?

What symbols can you use or create to tell your story?

Fourth Grade learned about printmaking by looking at the work of Vermont Printmaker Sabra Field. First we watched a video about the work of Sabra Field, then we brainstormed ideas for our own prints. Students were asked to make their print about life in Vermont. We learned about thumbnail sketching to come up with more interesting art ideas and concepts. Students picked their favorite sketch to turn into a print.
