2nd Grade
Texture
2nd grade is learning about the element of art "Texture". Texture can be real or tactile. Tactile texture is texture you can feel, like the soft hair of a cat, or the rough bark of a tree. Texture can also be implied. Artists can use a variety of techniques to create the illusion of texture in their artwork.
2nd graders used oil pastel and colored tissue paper to rub textures from texture plates. Then, they cut shapes out of their textures to collage them onto a piece of paper. Finally, they used white oil pastels to fill the negative space in their compositions with line.

Nature Pinch Pots
During Intercession 2nd grade was learning about the Indigenous people of America. Students collected materials from nature to use in making their pinch pots. During art, we looked at Native American pottery for inspiration for our pinch pots.

Frida Kahlo Self-Portraits
First grade learned how to draw a self-portrait. Then we learned about Frida Kahlo, and how she used her artwork to express her emotions. Students added details to their self-portraits to express who they are. They were asked to add one animal, one plant, and one object that represented them to their portraits. Students traced their pencil lines with black oil pastel, and painted using tempera cakes.
