Glossary

  • Advisory: some of our schools have students grouped in advisories where they connect with one consistent adult and a small group at regular times during the week

  • Morning Meeting: Students begin the day as a group, checking in with teachers and classmates to build relationships

  • SEL: social emotional learning - enhanced through Advisory and Morning Meeting, and throughout each day

  • Cohort - a small group of people (Step II - class sizes of 10-12 students plus 1-2 adults with 6-foot distancing), contained in one classroom space or specified outdoor space to reduce exposure, reduce the spread, and manage cohorts for contact tracing efforts


  • Asynchronous: when students complete work at different times

  • Synchronous: when all are engaged and learning simultaneously


  • Hybrid and Hybrid-Remote: this is the option for the start of the school year where students attend school in-person for some days each week and are learning offsite or remotely on others

  • Fully-remote program: this is the option available to families that do not want their student(s) to attend school in-person at all

  • Virtual: the same as remote when referring to a learning option

  • VT VLC: Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative, an organization that offers online learning opportunities to students and families in Vermont. They are partnering with Vermont K-12 schools this year to provide these opportunities.
