My copy of Jean-Louis Chretien’s
the Ark of Speech is annotated so
much, there are whole entire pages filled
with highlighter—there’ not a single word
uncolored by my thoughts; no margin left
blank like John Locke’s tabula rasa
Yes,
if years from now, some archaeologist
digs up Jean’s book—my book—perhaps she’d see
a sketchbook brimming with landscapes,
natures mortes,
portraits and nudes.
Surveying then, the site,
she’d add her figurations to our file,
and place us with her treasured artifacts.
