Carolina Lopez-Vivar is a senior English major with minors in Philosophy and Politics Pre-Law.
The walls of my room are an electric blue. All the bedrooms in my parent's house are the same electric blue. Both family rooms are the color of pale green. All of the furniture had to be dark brown; from the couches, to the chairs, tables, desks, and bookshelves. All of the decor was decided by my mother, even my room’s. I never liked the electric blue in my room, it’s too excited to be intense and bright all the time. But I also don't know what other color I would have gone with. Probably a color that wasn’t bright but rather dull. Perhaps green. There are green accents all around my room; the green fern/zebra bedsheets, the fake plant garland atop my dresser, my bamboo, zz plant, and there’s also the green pothos plant hanging from the ceiling. I’ve had the plant for almost three years but for some odd reason he hasn’t grown much into those long vines. I think my mother has been coming in to cut it and keep it short, probably to avoid another instance of it overgrowing and me pinning it against the ceiling to give it room to stretch. That’s why I had to have my room repainted a second time of the same annoyingly bright electric blue. I had accidentally stained my ceiling green when I pinned the pathos vines. I hadn’t thought my parents would mind considering they are gardeners, I thought they’d be proud of me having a green thumb and also being into plants. There isn’t much I can do about the paint but I try my best to make it an agreeable place to be in. People say that bedrooms are a museum of all the things loved and that it can be a reflection of who one is. I can feel this being my last year living at my parents now that I am a senior in college so I’ve started painting on the wall a bunch of flowers and plants. Before majoring in English, my parents had only allowed me to buy books that were law related, any books on English literature had to be checked out from the library. I no longer have an interest in law, the career which my parents had approved of, so I have taken all my awards from mock trial and any law related text books out, they now sit in the basement’s book shelf. I’ve grown to really love my major and now there are little stacks of novels and English anthologies all over my room.
