Cold Nights

Erik Peters
I like the cold nights best.
The nights when the power fails
So we can’t use our phones
And there’s no heat;
The nights when our feet freeze
On the drafty floors
And we brush our teeth by candlelight;
The nights when there’s frost
On the inside of the panes
And the blankets you knit
Can’t keep us warm;
The nights when the shower
Won’t get hot
And the winter wind
Whips through the weatherstripping.
I like the nights when we have
To cuddle and chat
Sharing our bodies’ warmth.
I like the cold nights best.
