Anastasia is a student in the School of Engineering at Catholic University ('26). Her favorite feeling in the world is the laughter that comes after realizing that a beautiful sentence she just read was actually pure British sarcasm.
Grandma Louise always told me to have more confidence. Chin up, eyes ahead! The
sun is still shining, isn’t it? I’d roll my eyes, laugh, and throw my shoulders back, trying to
exude simultaneous nonchalance and poise. I’d always know, though, that wasn’t
confidence that got me this job. It was excruciating attention to the precision of my
measurements. It was awareness of the responsibility I held by having access to the water
supply of every single household. I expertly navigated the shelf, hesitated for a moment,
then selected a translucent bottle. I scooped out a small, freakishly white sample, scrolled
to her address, and clicked it. A lid popped open, and I poured it in. I pictured her slumped
figure, chin resting on her chest, eyes closed. Dark. That is... if all goes well. It’s a good thing
I’m confident.
