Teacher Candidates
At CSU Monterey Bay, we are passionate about teacher education.
At CSU Monterey Bay, we are passionate about teacher education.
The co-teaching program at CSUMB is organized under the university's Department of Education and Leadership. This department is housed in the College of Education.
CSUMB Co-Teaching Teacher Candidates are placed in classrooms throughout our partner district schools and are supported in the field by dedicated Cooperating Teachers and an experienced team of Clinical Coaching Faculty.
The Field Placement and Database Coordinator coordinates field placement for co-teaching teacher candidates and ensures that all candidates (intern and co-teaching) have an assigned Clinical Coach for supervision.
We encourage you learn more about:
the size and scope of our field placement partnerships,
the professional dispositions we emphasize for candidates in our programs,
CSUMB's co-teaching model.
co-teaching for Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education Teacher Candidates.
Advantages to consider:
You benefit from continuous mentoring opportunities throughout the year.
You are able to engage in ongoing conversations with your Cooperating Teacher about lesson planning and implementation, throughout the semester or year.
You will be given time and space to try new things and exert leadership with your co-teaching field experience.
Important points to acknowledge:
Ultimately, the Cooperating Teacher is responsible for everything that happens in the classroom.
The Cooperating Teacher holds the permanent position; the Teacher Candidate is on a temporary assignment.
You may have to navigate difficult situations in your placement (e.g. issues of shared control, differences in teaching style, or contrasting philosophies with respect to classroom management). This is a part of co-teaching.
Prospective Teacher Candidates interested in the co-teaching pathway are encouraged to learn more about our program admission requirements and explore this website for additional information. Prospective Teacher Candidates with questions or concerns about the status of their application are encouraged to contact Shawna Gannon, Dept. of Education and Leadership Admissions & Recruitment Coordinator, at sgannon@csumb.edu.
