OBJECTIVE
This activity will equip students with the skills to efficiently use Google Sheets for data management, basic data analysis, and visualization, fostering their ability to apply spreadsheet tools in academic and real-world scenarios.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this activity, students will:
Understand the interface and basic functionalities of Google Sheets.
Be able to enter, organize, and manipulate data within a spreadsheet.
Apply basic formulas and functions to perform calculations.
Create charts and graphs to visualize data.
Collaborate in real-time with peers using Google Sheets' sharing and commenting features.
1. Introduction to Google Sheets
Student Task: Log in to your Google accounts, navigate to Google Sheets, and open a new blank spreadsheet.
Sign in with your Google account.
Click on the Blank sheet option.
A new Google Sheet window will open. At the top-left corner, click on Untitled Spreadsheet and rename it to something like “Spreadsheet_Surname"”
2. Data Entry and Organization (20 minutes)
Student Task:
Data Entry: Input a sample dataset (e.g., student names and test scores).
Data Organization: Use features like sorting. Sort the data according to names (A-Z).
3. Using Basic Formulas and Functions
Student Task:
SUM Function: Calculate the total score for each student using the SUM function. Input the "Total Score" in column F.
AVERAGE Function: Determine the student average for all subjects using the AVERAGE function. Input the "Average" in Column G.
IF Function: Determine if the student "Passed" or "Failed" if the passing score of the total core is 150. Input the "Passed/Failed" in Column H
4. Data Visualization
Student Task:
Create a Chart: Generate a bar chart that compares the total scores and the average only.
Customize the Chart: Adjust chart elements like:
Chart Title (Section Newton Performance) Font Style (Wide), Font Size (30)
Chart background color (Yellow)
Chart style (3D)
Series shows (Data Labels)

Important Reminder:
When sharing your output, please ensure that the sharing settings are updated to “Anyone with the link can access” and not restricted to only the institution’s Gmail accounts. Additionally, make sure to change the permission settings to Editor so that necessary edits can be made.
