We mapped our digital ecosystem during the first CRIBOOT workshop.
Frankly, it's a mess :
CRI is now 10 years old and growing fast. Our culture of change and innovation means that there are new software and digital tools popping up everyday, which means that each team uses its own set of tools, sometimes do almost exactly the same thing that the one that the neighboring team installed last month (albeit with cooler design and a trendier app name).
Before summer, our digital ecosystem will be rationalized (no duplicate apps!)
At this point, you might wonder what the #&@! we are talking about? Why bother improving it? An organization like CRI is fueled by many things : a shared sense of purpose, loads of skills, talented students and teachers, some money... But it also works thanks to loads of digital tools : administration applications for budget, finance and HR management, scientific software, email, smartphone apps, communication tools, semi-automated processes, web tools to share files, thought and projects, etc. All these tools interact with each other. And when they don't work, problems happen.
Part of our job as IT-Team is to rationalize our digital ecosystem without losing our agility. We also need to keep in mind scalability : our CRI will continue to grow, and it should be a model for future universities and places of learning. It's all right to degree a few hundred smart students from the heights of Montparnasse Tower, it's even better if our innovative ways to teach, learn and manage a small learning place can be applied cheaply all over the world.
