Welcome, 7th Grade ELA!
My name is Ms. Anderson, and I'm thrilled to be your Science teacher this school year!
A bit about me:
I was a high school English teacher for 16 years, and for the last 12 years of my high school tenure, I was teaching at Lindblom Math and Science Academy, a CPS Selective Enrollment school on the South Side. I got to teach everything from 8th Grade English to AP Literature at Lindblom, and I also used to coach both debate and sailing. When my kids started elementary school, I discovered how much I like the K-8 elementary school environment, decided to make a change, and landed at Portage Park! For the last two years, I've been teaching 7th Grade ELA, but this year I am teaching Science and Social Science. I've still got a great library for students to borrow books, but I'm excited to dig into science with as much hands-on learning as possible.
In my free time, I love to be outdoors. I'm a big gardener, and I enjoy eating fruit and vegetables that my family grows all year round. I also try to get on the water as much as possible. Sailing on Lake Michigan or hiking at the Indiana Dunes are some of my favorite ways to enjoy Lake Michigan.
I've got a 5th grade daughter, a 6th grade son, my husband, a few fish, and the squirrels and birds who raid our garden at home. In our house, we are always reading, and I'm looking forward to sharing my interest in reading with you this year, too!
7th Grade Science Information:
7th Grade Science uses the Amplify curriculum. The bulk of our learning will be earth science this year, but we will dive into introductory chemistry and biology, too.
Both student work and course materials will be organized and consistently updated on Google Classroom.
I send out a weekly newsletter via Aspen/email to students and families to keep everyone in the loop about schoolwide announcements, what we have learned the previous week, and what we are going to learn in the next week. Some students and their families read this newsletter together. This is a great way to start a conversation with your student about their learning, so give reading the newsletter together a try!
