Nutrition Activities
Some Suggested Activities to do in Natural Science Class:
ACTIVITIES.-Â
Food Group Sorting Game:
Create cards or images representing different food items from various food groups (e.g., fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, dairy).
Divide the students into small groups.
Have each group work together to sort the cards or images into the correct food groups.
Discuss the importance of each food group and why a balanced diet is essential.
Nutrition Bingo:
Create Bingo cards with different food items or nutrients instead of numbers.
Call out descriptions of the foods or nutrients, and students mark them on their Bingo cards.
Encourage discussions about the nutritional benefits of each item as they play.
Cooking or Snack Preparation:
Organize a hands-on cooking or snack preparation session in the classroom.
Choose a healthy recipe that the students can make together, such as a fruit salad, yogurt parfait, or vegetable wraps.
Discuss the nutritional value of the ingredients while they prepare and enjoy the snack.
Food Label Scavenger Hunt:
Provide students with various food labels from packaged items (ensure they are age-appropriate and not overly complex).
In pairs or small groups, have students analyze the labels to find information like serving size, calories, fat content, sugar content, and ingredients.
Discuss the significance of reading food labels and making informed choices.
Nutrition Poster or Infographic Project:
Assign students to create posters or infographics about different aspects of nutrition, such as the food pyramid, recommended daily allowances, or the benefits of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.
Allow them to use images, drawings, and text to convey their messages effectively.
Have a class presentation where each group explains their poster or infographic.
Healthy Meal Planning:
Provide students with a hypothetical budget and a list of groceries.
Ask them to plan a healthy meal for a family of four within the budget.
Discuss their meal choices, including the nutritional value and cost-effectiveness of their selections.
This activity can incorporate math skills and critical thinking.
