The early childhood grades are the foundation for the development of students’ life-long cognitive/academic, physical, and social-emotional/behavioral skills. Research indicates students who attain grade level standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, beginning in Grades K-2, are more likely to experience positive outcomes academically, psychologically, and socially throughout their school years. During the early childhood years, through formative and summative assessments and observational data, educators are able to initially identify students who present learning challenges, implement targeted evidence-based practices, and if necessary refer students for formal evaluations to determine their need for special education services. The resources for Grades K-2 are intended to highlight best practices and provide suggested accommodations and modifications for students with diverse learning needs to meet the NYS Standards and learning targets with support and guidance.

The sample lesson plans presented for in-class and hybrid instruction were designed using the Gradual Release model. The purpose of the samples is to highlight possible accommodations, modifications and UDL strategies to support all students, including students with Individualized Education Service Plans (IESP) and/or students who demonstrate learning challenges during each component of the lessons. Also indicated are possible digital tools to be used during the hybrid lesson.
