Open Enrollment
During our annual open enrollment period, you may make new benefit elections effective January 1st.
Qualifying Event
A qualifying life event (QLE) is a change in your circumstances that will require changes to your health benefits. A qualifying life event allows an employee to make any changes to their benefits or enroll in benefits outside of the annual Open Enrollment period. Employees are responsible for notifying the Benefits Department of any benefits change(s) due to a qualifying life event within 30 days from the event. Coverage will become effective the first of the following month of the event date.
Examples of a qualifying event include, but are not limited to:
Marriage, domestic partnership, divorce, legal separation, death of spouse/partner, or annulment
Birth of a child, adoption, medical child support order, or death of a dependent
Loss of coverage from another health plan. This includes losing coverage under a spouse's plan, losing coverage under a state's Medicaid/Medical programs, or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Dependent eligibility status changing due reaching max age of 26
Coverage for a new dependent is not automatic. If you experience a qualifying event, you have 30 days to update your coverage. If you do not update your coverage within 30 days of the qualifying event, you must wait until the next annual open enrollment period to update your coverage.
Compton USD will need to verify that all dependents being enrolled in the district's health plans are eligible for coverage. If the employee cannot provide us the required documents, the American Fidelity will not be able to enroll the dependent(s).
If you have experienced a Qualifying Life Event (marriage, divorce, or birth/adoption of a child) you will still need to provide the required documents to the American Fidelity at your scheduled meeting.
REMEMBER!!!! You are responsible for notifying the Benefits Department if you experienced a qualifying event within 30 calendar days. Please contact the Benefits Department to complete the appropriate election forms as needed. If you do not update your coverage within 30 days from the qualifying event, you must wait until the next annual open enrollment period to update your coverage.
