Welcome to Learning In Public
At the beginning of 2024, College Unbound started a 6-month process to update and align the Big 10 with current skills for professional development. Students, alumni, and faculty were involved and found the process very useful and powerful. At College Unbound, students will continue to earn credit by showing they have the skills needed to lead change. CU uses rubrics to grade student work at two levels. If students are at the Developing or Emerging stages, they need to improve their work. By graduation, all students should reach the Integrated or Applied level in General Education Foundational Learning Outcomes for the current Big 10s Transformational Leadership and Change (TLC) . These Big10 TLC’s make sure students at College Unbound gain the skills and knowledge to make positive changes in their communities and beyond.
Some of the competencies changed. For instance, Intercultural Engagement is now more about Equity & Justice.
The criteria is less wordy.
The templates are easier to follow with clear questions.
There are no more expert/practitioner levels. Portfolios either earn credit or you will be asked to revise.
You all spoke up, answered surveys, participated in focus groups and made clear what you wanted:
Less wordy, clearer directions, more guidance
It had been too long since their creation. The intention is for the Big10 to adapt and evolve to meet the needs of our students and our current and shifting world. Going forward, the Big10 will be updated every five years.
You have options! You can continue with the Big10 as you have done OR you can submit one or more from the TLC Big10 (Transformative Leadership and Change). See the chart below for how the TLC Big10 can fill in for the original Big10.
If you have already completed your Big10, you don’t need to worry about it at all. You are set.
