At CU, Faculty report student engagement in Moodle for each of their classes each term. This information is reviewed on a weekly basis to initiate student support and inform advising practices.
Every week, all instructors use the Attendance/Engagement tool in their Moodle courses to enter each student’s engagement.
This video (9:20 minutes) explains how (and why) to use the Attendance: Engagement tool in Moodle.
You can also follow the steps on this Scribe how-to (embedded below).
Descriptions of Engagement statuses for Lab, Instructional synchronous, and Instructional asynchronous courses can be found on this Engagement Guidance Document.
Submission for engagement should be completed by Monday of the following week.
When Engagement information shows that a student is falling behind, reveals a pattern of disengagement, and/or shows a gap in engagement that can prevent a student from being successful in their coursework, Lab Faculty and the Student Support Team are brought in to initiate the supports that can help a student get back on track academically and access resources to meet immediate and long-term needs.
When CU Student Support (support@collegeunbound.edu) is contacted by Instructional or Lab Faculty, the student support team works collaboratively to act, accompany, and advocate with and for the student. Students will be brought into a 1:1 discussion with a Community Care staff member to figure out next steps.
In addition to reporting weekly Engagement in Moodle for the Workplace and World Lab course, Lab Faculty receive a report of flagged Engagement entered by other faculty for the students in their lab(s). Lab Faculty should use this information in tandem with their advising files for their students to inform 1:1 meetings, advising practices, and student support. Lab Faculty may also be contacted by Instructional Faculty if a student misses more than one class, falls more than a little behind on assignments, or is otherwise struggling.
Instructional faculty report weekly Engagement in Moodle for all the students in their course(s). If a student misses class, instructional faculty should make an effort to be in touch with the student and encourage attendance/engagement in class.
The Engagement Alert Form is the primary way to contact the Provost's office when a student:
has missed two consecutive weeks of any course or is showing a concerning pattern of engagement issues
not responding to lab faculty communications
not coming to classes or responding to faculty attempts to get in contact
You can also contact the Provost and Student Support via email directly (provost@collegeunbound.edu, support@collegeunbound.edu).
When Faculty complete the Engagement Alert Form, the Student and their Lab Faculty are contacted with Student Support and Academic Support to initiate follow up.
Lab Faculty receive weekly updates for their students on any low-no engagement flags for students in their cohort(s). These updates are compiled in a spreadsheet and shared with Lab Faculty. Lab Faculty are notified to reach out to their students and use this information to guide student supports and 1-1 meetings.
