NORTH CAROLINA FOUNDATIONS FOR EARLY LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT: Cognitive Development~Mathematical Thinking and Expression (CD-10 thru CD-13, pages 137-141). The strategies for Infants and Toddlers are found on page 142-143. The expectations and strategies for educators are intended to be incorporated throughout the instructional day, but may or may not be addressed specifically in the OWL curriculum. The Developing Math Concepts book is used as a resource to help support teachers as they supplement the OWL curriculum with developmentally appropriate mathematics activities. It is expected that teachers will supplement the curriculum during RETEACH days as needed to ensure all expectations are addressed.
Data is gathered throughout the year on the Teaching Strategies Gold electronic data collection system using student work samples, video clips, photographs and/or anecdotal notes.

Two dimensional shapes linked to 3-D representations. Keep it simple by only introducing the 4 major shapes at first. As students master them, you may enrich their learning by teaching the other higher level shapes.

These organizers [5 frame strips] may support students in counting sets, especially in upcoming small group lesson What’s Hiding (20a). Students can put a manipulative in each box as they count as a way to organize and track when counting with one-to-one correspondence. A ten frame could support students working on counting sets up to 10 and a double 10 frame could support students in organizing and counting a set above 10. submitted by Shannon Banas, Pre-K Literacy Facilitator 2017

SMALL GROUP~ROLL AGAIN ALTERNATIVE: I am attaching an alternative to the Roll Again game from the DMC lesson. You would use a die that may or may not be modified based on your students and bingo chips or some other ‘markers’. Each student receives one strip of 10 and 10 counters. They roll the die, count the dots and move their marker. They ‘finish’ when they reach the end. (Thanks again, Arpita!) FOUNDATIONS~ CD-10q: Given a number 0-5, count out that many objects; APL-3r: Develop and sustain more complex pretend play themes in cooperation with peers
A colleague shared this activity, “I have attached a document called “Apple Orchard Pay Dough” (can be used in play dough or blocks) and “Play Dough Mat Trees”. (Thank you, Arpita!) FOUNDATIONS~HPD-5: Children develop small muscle control and hand-eye coordination to manipulate objects and work with tools; APL-3r: Develop and sustain more complex pretend play themes in cooperation with peers; APL-4l: Plan play scenarios and use props or tools to enact them; CD-10q: Given a number 0-5, count out that many objects; APL-3r: Develop and sustain more complex pretend play themes in cooperation with peers
Instructional Supports: Refer to the Foundations Targeted Instructional Strategies document and/or the Developing Math Concepts (DMC) book for more instructional activities.
NUMBER SENSE: Use Tell Me Fast dot cards (DMC book)
1 TO 1 COUNTING: Draw numbered circles outside and have children hop inside them while counting
ROTE COUNTING: Sing songs like Greg and Steve's "The Number Rock".
ROTE COUNTING: Use a number grid to help students 'see' the numbers as you count out loud. This strategy is especially important for those students who skip a number when rote counting and with whom the auditory scaffold (TO-WITH-BY) has helped. Lead those students to discover the patterns on the numbers board.
ROTE COUNTING: Use what students 'know' to help them learn the 'unknown'. For example, if students are having trouble remembering 'fifteen' when rote counting, connect it (unknown word) to the ordinal word 'fifth' as in 'Fifth grade' or 'fifth in line' (known word).
Counting to 10 video shared by Nicole Cappello, Piney Grove "Here's the link to that 1-10 rote counting song I found that was cute. I usually stop it before counting 10-1."
Over, Under, In, and Out: Spatial Relationship Activities for Preschooler
Positional Word Activities for Preschoolers
Children between the ages of 3 and 6 are more than ready to develop their skills at expressing directions from different locations and understanding relative positions. They are fundamentally interested in modeling their world, whether in the block corner or the housekeeping area, and spatial relationships are a large part of what they grapple with there. The more such experiences they have, particularly in the company of adults who help to mathematize them, the easier it will be to make their own representations of space mathematically precise when they get to geometry class.

"Spatial awareness is the ability to be aware of oneself in space. It is an organised knowledge of objects in relation to oneself in that given space. Spatial awareness also involves understanding the relationship of these objects when there is a change of position."
