Band (First Semester Courses)

Marching Percussion - 1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

College Preparatory Prerequisite: audition

Honors Prerequisite: 2 Units of credit in band, teacher recommendation

This class is designed for the fall marching percussionist. Rehearsals occur during and outside of the school day.  Membership is determined by director recommendation and/or auditions held in the spring.  Performances include football games, competitions, parades, and a winter concert. Concluding marching band state finals, members will be expected to participate in percussion ensemble, and perform solo repertoire. 

 

Marching Winds - 1 Unit - Grades 9- 12

Marching Color Guard -1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

Band (Second Semester Courses)

Concert Band  - 1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

College Preparatory, Honors Prerequisite: audition

Honors Prerequisite: 2 Units of credit in band, teacher recommendation

This class is designed for students with musical abilities necessary to perform Level 3 and 4 band literature. Students should expect to be assigned to Concert Band unless their playing abilities far exceed an average level of musicianship. Membership is open to all band students.  Extra rehearsals are scheduled after-school as needed and members should expect at least two public performances.  Honors level students must meet additional requirements as outlined by the director.

 

Symphonic Band  - 1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

College Preparatory, Honors Prerequisite: audition

Honors Prerequisite: 2 Units of credit in band, teacher recommendation

This class is designed for students with musical abilities necessary to perform Level 4 and 5 band literature. Students should expect to be assigned to Symphonic Band unless their playing abilities far exceed an average level of musicianship. Membership is determined by auditions held in the spring.  Extra rehearsals are scheduled after-school as needed and members should expect at least two public performances.   Honors level students must meet additional requirements as outlined by the director.

 

Wind Ensemble - 1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

Honors Prerequisite: 2 Units of credit in band, teacher recommendation

This class is designed for the advanced instrumental student with musical abilities necessary to perform Level 5 and 6 band literature. Membership is determined by auditions held in the spring. Extra rehearsals are scheduled after-school as needed and members should expect at least two public performances. Honors level students must meet additional requirements as outlined by the director.

 

Percussion Ensemble - 1 Unit - Grades 9 – 12

College Preparatory, Honors Prerequisite: audition

Honors Prerequisite: 2 Units of credit in band, teacher recommendation

This class is designed for the indoor marching percussionist and curriculum designed for a well-rounded percussion education. Rehearsals are scheduled as needed after school and membership is determined by auditions held in November/December. Performances include competitions and a spring concert. Members will be expected to participate in percussion ensemble, perform solo repertoire, and perform required material for All-Region Band. Placement in Concert Band and Wind Ensemble percussion sections will be determined by the director.   Honors level students must meet additional requirements as outlined by the director.

Prerequisite: Enrollment in a Band, Choral, or Private musical program of study, and demonstrate proficiency (read and write musical notation)

The Honors Music Theory course covers topics such as musicianship, theory, musical materials, and procedures.  Musicianship skills including dictation and other listening skills, sight-singing/playing, and keyboard harmony are considered an important part of the course.  Through the course, students develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score.  Development of aural skills is a primary objective.  Performance is also part of the learning process.  Students understand basic concepts and terminology by listening to and performing a wide variety of music.  Notational skills, speed, and fluency with basic materials are emphasized. Women’s Ensemble - 1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

College Preparatory Prerequisite: Audition

This class is designed for all female freshmen with an emphasis on basic choral skills. Extra rehearsals are scheduled as needed and mandatory for performance participation. This course is scheduled on opposite days with PE 1. 

 

Men’s Ensemble - 1 Unit - Grades 9 - 12

College Preparatory Prerequisite: Audition

This class is designed for all male freshmen with an emphasis on basic choral skills. Extra rehearsals are scheduled as needed and mandatory for performance participation. This course is scheduled on opposite days with PE 1.

 

Choraliers - 2 Units - Grades 9 - 12

Honors Prerequisite: prior choral experience, audition

This class is designed as a performance-oriented ensemble which emphasizes the development of individual vocal ability, sight-reading, and overall musicianship. In addition to school hours, this group practices every Monday night from 7:00 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. Extra rehearsals are scheduled as needed. Membership is determined by auditions held in the spring. Students who enroll in Choraliers are committing to a yearlong course.

Dance 1 – 1 Unit – Grades 9 – 12

College Preparatory  

This is an introductory course-examining dance as art, communication, and cultural expression. The class will focus on basic dance technique in ballet, modern, and jazz, as well as anatomical awareness that is pervasive throughout their lives. Proper body alignment, coordination, rhythm, strength, agility, dance vocabulary, and increased kinesthetic awareness in general are developed. Students will become acquainted with gaining movement skills and finding confidence and enjoyment through movement. No previous dance experience is necessary. Dance costumes are an extremely important part of the dance performance at Clover High School. Costumes help bring to life the performance as they transform the students by adding confidence, showmanship and uniformity on stage. To help offset the costs associated with costumes, all dance students will be required to pay a $30 dollar rental fee for each semester of dance.

Dance 2 – 1 Unit – Grades 9 – 12

College Preparatory Prerequisite: Dance 1 or instructor permission

Dance 2 will build upon concepts and training developed in Dance 1. Students study intermediate level technique and vocabulary with emphasis on strength, flexibility, agility, and musical phrasing. Classical training will have more focus during this semester.  Choreographic skills and the creative process will be developed in this class through exploration and improvisation in various dance forms. Dance costumes are an extremely important part of the dance performance at Clover High School. Costumes help bring to life the performance as they transform the students by adding confidence, showmanship and uniformity on stage. College Preparatory Prerequisite: Dance 2 or instructor permission

This is an introductory course focusing on dance composition and the creative process. Choreographic skills and aesthetic evaluation will be developed through the study of compositional and improvisational methods. By selecting and designing the elements of time, space, and energy students will choreograph movement with meaning and purpose. Emphasis will be on choreographic forms, processes, and structures. The course will culminate with students choreographing solo and group work to be presented in the semester’s dance concert. Dance costumes are an extremely important part of the dance performance at Clover High School. Pre-Professional Dance - Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 - Grades 9 - 12

Honors Prerequisite:  Audition;  Fees Apply

The Pre-Professional Dance Class is an audition-based class for students at the most advanced level of dance study at Clover High School. This course focuses on advanced level technique, choreography composition/production, and pre professional skills such as auditioning, an introduction to teaching, and career/college opportunities in dance. Dance costumes are an extremely important part of the dance performance at Clover High School. Costumes help bring to life the performance as they transform the students by adding confidence, showmanship and uniformity on stage. To help offset the costs associated with costumes, all dance students will be required to pay a $40 dollar costume rental fee for each semester of dance. Theater 1 CP -- 1 Unit - Grades 9-12

College Preparatory

This semester course provides an introduction to the basic elements of acting and script reading and is open to students of all grade levels. The course covers pantomime, improvisation, use of voice, physicality, history of acting, Theater, and memorization. This course focuses on techniques, aspects and theories of acting through various activities including, pantomime, improvisation, use of voice, physicality, history of acting, Theater styles. Theater 3 Honors- 1 Unit – Grades 10-12

Honors Prerequisite: Theater 2

This course focuses on advanced techniques, aspects and theories of acting through various activities including mime, pantomime, improvisation, use of voice, physicality, history of acting, specific comedy and Theater styles and monologues. Honor Prerequisite: Theater 3 and Instructor approval

Advanced Theater will provide the student with a more complete experience in theater. Students will be exposed to directing and acting experiences in both stage and film providing the students with a wider range of career options. Auditioning for school productions will be required. Visual Art

Art 1 CP – Grades 9-12

Prerequisites: None

This is a foundations course that covers the basics in understanding and working with the elements and principles of design. Students will develop basic art knowledge and skills working with a variety of art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed-media and sculpture. Students will maintain a sketchbook and some independent work is expected.

Art 2 Honors Grade 9  

Prerequisite: This course is designed for art students coming from 8th grade with a recommendation from their art teacher for advanced studies in Visual Art. Students must have teacher recommendation from their Middle school art teacher and approval of high school art teacher.

This course is designed for students who are interested in the techniques and processes within the fields of drawing and painting. Many different mediums will be introduced, such as graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pen and ink, pastel, acrylics and watercolors. Students will have the opportunity to work in a classroom environment that fosters creativity and nurtures personal ideas in artwork. Students are expected to maintain a sketchbook for planning purposes and experimentation throughout the semester. Some independent work is expected.  Successful completion of this course, maintaining a “B” average or higher can qualify students for Art 3 Honors. [ 350200HW]

Art 2 CP- (Mixed Media) – Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisite:  Score of 70% or better in Art 1

This course is designed for students who are interested in techniques and processes in the field of drawing and painting and mixed media and 3D design.  Students will have the opportunity to work in a classroom environment that fosters creativity and matures personal ideas in artwork.  Students are expected to maintain a sketchbook for planning purposes and experimentation throughout the semester. Prerequisite: Art 2 CP with a minimum grade of 80% or completion of Art 2 honors 9th with a minimum grade of 70%

This course combines creativity and technical skill to solve a variety of visual art assignments. Art history, advanced techniques, professional materials and critical thinking skills become integral. The first quarter is focused largely on understanding and utilizing the principles of design, while the second quarter is based more on problem-solving and decision-making with chosen media. Students will maintain a sketchbook for class and more independent time is expected at the Art 3 level. Art 4 Honors- Two Dimensional Design -  Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Art 3 Honors with a minimum grade of 70%

In depth work with the principles of design, extended investigation of thematic artworks are the focus of this course.  Art composition, graphic design, design thinking demonstrating your breadth of knowledge and technical skills with multiple mediums. Students are expected to maintain a sketchbook documenting the design processes and artistic growth of each project. Much independent work time is required at this level. This course is high rigor and pacing. Success in this course is essential for students interested in AP Studio Art credit. [H:350400HW]

Art Drawing 4 Honors – Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: Art 3 with a final grade of 80% or better

Art 4 Drawing combines technical and conceptual skills at an advanced level and pace. A variety of art approaches is explored to complete multiple developed works. Students are required to keep an extensive sketchbook with weekly assignments. Projects will include an extended investigation component. Independent work outside of class time is critical for success at this level (This course is also the first semester of AP art but a student can elect to take just this class for a single unit of credit not related to the AP Portfolio. Prerequisite: Art 4 Two-Dimensional Design Honors with a minimum grade of 80 or above

Students will complete an in-depth exploration of a particular artistic concern or specific visual idea. The work must be a body of related works (thematic) with visual coherence. It should grow out of and demonstrate a plan of action and sustained investigation with invested time, effort, skill and thought. Students will learn how to organize their portfolio, create effective presentations, develop an art resume, and participate in numerous art activities.

*Successful completion of the portfolio, based on the AP College Board’s final score, allows students to earn college credit.

Art 3D Design 1 CP – Grades 9-12

Prerequisites: None

This is a beginning sculpture class. Students will use the principles and elements of design to create three-dimensional sculptures in clay, paper, wood, textiles, mixed-media, wire, natural resources and recycled objects. Students will design and create original work focused on structural support, 360 degrees of design and viewing, craftsmanship and the elements and principles of design in three dimensions. Students will maintain a sketchbook and some independent work is expected.

Art 3D Design 2 CP Grades 10-12 

Pre-req: 3D Design 1 and Teacher Recommendation

This course is designed for students interested in further experiences creating and learning about three-dimensional art. Students will explore and gain experience in a wide variety of materials, such as clay, paper, wood, textiles, mixed-media, wire, natural resources and recycled objects. Many sculptural techniques will be utilized including constructing, assemblage, carving and casting. Students will learn to photograph their work and maintain a digital portfolio. Students will maintain a sketchbook and independent work is expected.

Art 3D Design 3 H Grades 11-12 

Pre-req: 3D Design 2 and Teacher Recommendation

This course combines creativity and technical skill to solve a variety of visual art assignments. Art history, advanced techniques, professional materials and critical thinking skills become integral. The first quarter is focused largely on understanding and utilizing the principles of design, while the second quarter is based more on problem-solving and concept work. Art 3 Dimensional Design 4 Honors - Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: 3-Dimensional Design 3 Honors with a grade of 80% or better

In-depth work with the principles of design and extended investigation of thematic artworks are the focus of this course.  Art composition, design thinking, demonstrating a breadth of knowledge and technical skills with multiple media is integral in this course. Students are expected to maintain a sketchbook documenting the design processes and artistic growth of each project. This course is high rigor and pacing. AP Art History - 1 Unit - Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisite:  Honors level English Course or completion of at least one AP Course.              

APAH is a semester-long course that has no prerequisites, counts as a fine arts credit,  AND is a writing intensive course. No prior experience in studio art or art history is necessary! APAH is designed to provide the same benefits to high school students as those provided by an introductory college course in Art History. The course will cover topics such as architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within a diverse historical and cultural context. In the course, students will look at major forms of art from Cave Art up to the 21st century. We will discuss artistic techniques, materials, and design principles, but we will also explore issues such as politics, religion, patronage, gender, function, and ethnicity. Students will learn to look at works of art in a critical manner with intelligence and sensitivity, and to analyze what they see. For the majority of the class, we will focus on artwork in American and European traditions, but we will also examine artwork from cultures in China, Japan, Ancient Egypt, Africa, the Pacific, and the Ancient Near East. Many colleges and universities offer advanced placement and/or credit to students who have performed successfully on the College Board AP Art History Examination.  [357100AW]
