How Advanced Placement works
Students will take high school courses covering college curriculum taught by highly qualified AP teachers.
AP courses are weighted the same as DE courses in the SC UGP, which is on a 6.0 scale.
The SC Department of Education will pay the cost of the AP exam for students enrolled in an AP course.
AP courses do NOT generate a college transcript. High School students will sit for a final exam and earn a score of 1 - 5.
The college will decide which test and score is required to receive credit. Every college will list its AP policy on its website. Some examples:
AP classes are well regarded for college preparation even if a student does not earn a 3 or higher. For example, a student in AP Physics will be more comfortable studying physics in college than a student who never completed physics in high school.
