Computer Science Credit Courses

Fundamentals of Computing-1 Unit—Grades 9-12.

College Preparatory Prerequisites: none

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics. Through creativity and innovation, students will use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to implement projects that are relevant to students’ lives. They will create a variety of computing artifacts while collaborating in teams. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of the history and operation of computers, programming, and web design. Students will also be introduced to computing careers and will examine societal and ethical issues of computing. [502300CW]

 

Web Page Design Fundamentals – 1 Unit – Grades 10-12

College Preparatory Prerequisites: : Algebra 1 or Intermediate Algebra 1 OR Fundamentals of Computing

This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to design Web pages.  Students will develop skills in designing, implementing and maintaining a Website using the HTML and CSS programming languages.  This course will also include an introduction to the Dreamweaver Web Design software.  NOTE:  Web pages created by students in this course may not be published without following district guidelines. Computer Programming 1 Honors - 1 Unit - Grades 9-12

Honors Prerequisites: Algebra 1 with a grade of “B” or higher

This course of study is designed to emphasize the fundamentals of computer programming.  Topics include computer software, program design and development, and practical experience in programming, using modern, object-oriented languages. [505000HW]


Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles – 1 Unit AP Credit - Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisite:  Minimum Grade of 80% or better in Geometry Honors or Algebra 2 Honors

Note that this course does not count in the CTE completer sequence.

The AP Computer Science Principles course is designed to be equivalent to a first-semester introductory college computing course. In this course, students will develop computational thinking vital for success across all disciplines, such as using computational tools to analyze and study data and working with large data sets to analyze, visualize, and draw conclusions from trends. The course is unique in its focus on fostering student creativity. Students are encouraged to apply creative processes when developing computational artifacts and to think creatively while using computer software and other technology to explore questions that interest them. They will also develop effective communication and collaboration skills, working individually and collaboratively to solve problems, and discussing and writing about the importance of these problems and the impacts to their community, society, and the world. Accounting 1 - 1 Unit - Grades 10-12

This course introduces the student to the relationship between accounting and business through an understanding of the accounting cycle as applied to several different kinds of business operations and payroll work. Students also use the computer to see the advantages of technology in accounting procedures. [500100CW]

 

Accounting 2 - 1 Unit - Grades 11-12  

Honors Prerequisite: Accounting 1

This course provides the student with an opportunity to expand the applications of basic principles learned in Accounting 1. The student's ability to interpret business records for efficient management is increased along with employment opportunities in the accounting field. The course covers manual and computerized accounting tax procedures, payroll work, notes and interest, partnerships, and corporations.  The student will demonstrate accounting principles through the use of an accounting workbook as well as computer software.  [500500HW]

Image Editing 1 w/Photoshop – 1 unit – Grades 10-12

College Preparatory Prerequisites: none

This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to utilize Adobe Photoshop digital imaging software in editing and designing images and graphics. Students also learn the use of technologies related to digital imaging such as: basic computer operations; file sharing across networks; digital scanning; digital photography and document preparation for output to various types of media. This course examines all aspects of advertising and digital media marketing. Honors Prerequisites: Computer Programming 1 or approval from instructor

This course is designed to emphasize the fundamentals of computer programming.  Topics include computer hardware and software, program design and development, and practical experience in programming using the JAVA programming language. Computer Programming with JAVA 2 Honors - 1 Unit – Grades 11-12

Honors Prerequisite:  Computer Programming with Java 1

This course is designed to extend the skills of computer programming learned in Computer Programming with JAVA 1. Students will learn more advanced JAVA components including but not limited to arrays, classes, graphics and sorting. Cyber Security Fundamentals Activity CP - 1 Unit – Grades 9-12

College Preparatory Prerequisite:  Algbera 1 or Fundamentals of Computing or Computer Programming

In the Computer and Information Systems Security/Information Assurance program, students examine the core concepts and terminology of cyber security and
information assurance, integrating the importance of user involvement, network architecture, threats, and security; operational and system security; cryptography; contingency planning; application, data, and host security; access control and identity management; and a broad range of other topics. Prerequisite: Cyber Security Fundamentals

In the Computer and Information Systems Security/Information Assurance program, students examine the core concepts and terminology of cyber security and information assurance, integrating the importance of user involvement, network architecture, threats, and security; operational and system security; cryptography; contingency planning; application, data, and host security; access control and identity management; and a broad range of other topics. Dual Enrollment CPT 236 - Intro to Java Programming – Grades 11-12

Dual Credit Prerequisites: completion of Computer Programming 1 with JAVA preferably also completion of Computer Programming 2 with JAVA

This course is designed for the student who is planning a post-secondary major in computer science or in a related area of information technology. Upon completion, students should be able to: design, implement, and analyze solutions to problems; use and implement commonly used algorithms; develop and select appropriate algorithms and data structures to solve new problems; write solutions fluently in an object-oriented paradigm; write, run, test and debug solutions in the JAVA programming language, utilizing standard JAVA library classes; read and understand programs consisting of several classes and interacting objects; read and understand a description of the design and development process leading to such a program; and understand the ethical and social implications of computer use.

This course focuses on the overall web-design production process with particular emphasis on design elements involving layout, navigation, and interactivity.  Students will develop skills in designing, implementing, and maintaining a Website using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, as well as the Adobe Dreamweaver authoring tool.  Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe programs are also incorporated.  [503300HW]
