We have only a few more steps to climb! You can do it!
We concentrate on building vocabulary, answering questions about what we read with details from the text, and improving our writing. Occasionally we will practice academic listening skills and debate/presentation skills. The things we learn will help your child to keep up with what they are studying in class. At this stage, many students are eager to be finished with EAL lessons. Often they are very fluent speakers. However, it is important that they try hard in class, because building these skills will help them academically.
Encourage your child to read every night! They will have some reading homework from me , but they should also be reading books of their choosing every night for 20-30 minutes. Ask your child about what they are reading. Get them to explain in detail.
Remind your child not to compare themselves to others. Everyone learns differently and at different speeds. It is not a race. The study of a language takes many years. It is more important for them to try their best and to help their classmates than it is to be the best in the class.
Encourage your child to enjoy writing. Ask to see what they have written and praise them. Many children get frustrated, because grammar and spelling in a second language is difficult. It will develop over time. Instead, talk to them about their ideas and the details in their writing.
Help your child to build a list of vocabulary to use that is important to them. If there is a word that they read often and don't understand, or if they are writing and they consistently have to look up a word, get them to write it down with the translation. They should practice the spelling and try to remember what it means.
