An atlas is non-fiction.
It is a book of maps.
It is very important to know if what you are reading is fiction (a made up story) or non-fiction (true facts.) You can look for text features that give you clues. Be careful, some books try to trick you!
Story (with a beginning, middle, and end)

Dialogue (look for quotation marks - "")
Drawings
Author name is different than the main character.
Realistic Fiction (it seems like it could be true)
Historical Fiction (set in the past)
Fantasy (magic, supernatural)
Science Fiction (robots, space travel, future, etc.)
Mystery (crime to solve)
Horror (ghosts, vampires, etc.)
Mostly facts (may have some anecdotes)
Organized information (text boxes, bullet points, lists, timelines, etc.)
Visual information (photographs, diagrams, charts, graphs, maps, etc.)
Headings, subheadings, captions, labels, etc.
