Encourage your child to look and see what everyone else is doing. If everyone is getting out a pencil and a notebook, then they can, too! If everyone is lining up at the door, so should they.
Let your child know that it is okay to ask for help or to tell the teacher something. First, every child must raise their hand and wait for the teacher to call on them. If it is something simple (like asking to go to the washroom), they will have a ring of picture cards until they can use until they know the words. If there is a story they want to share (like what they did on the weekend), I encourage them to use pictures and gestures until they can start adding words. If they need to say something that is difficult to explain, they can ask to use Google Translate.
Each child needs a pair of indoor shoes. These cannot be sandals or boots as students will wear them in gym class while they are running. Please make sure your child can put these shoes on and take them off by themselves. At each progress report time, it is good to remember to ask your child if these shoes still fit them.
If you need to pick your child up early, please contact the office before 2:00. When you come to the school, please go to the office. If your child will be absent, please let the office or the teacher know. Please keep your child at home if they are sick.
What does "hands off" mean? Your child may hear this phrase at school. Teachers say it to remind students to keep their hands to themselves and not hit or push others. If a child wants to hug another child, they must ask that child for permission first. We realize that "rough play" is a part of childhood in other countries, but it is discouraged here. Please explain this to your child if it is different from their previous school.
In Canada, children are encouraged to take an active interest in their learning, and to push themselves. We often play games, do activities, and have discussions to help the students learn. We do not give a lot of homework, because we value letting children have time for play. Sometimes, this leads children to misunderstand what we expect, and they feel that school is only a place to play. This is not true. Students should be actively involved in thinking and talking about their lessons. They should identify what they need help with. They should make connections to the topics, and further their knowledge in aspects they find interesting. When they are able to read, they should be reading every night. A large emphasis is placed on understanding books, not just reading the words.
Kindness is valued in every culture, and it is important to consider that Canada is multicultural so there are different things to consider. In Canada, it is not polite to make negative comments about a student or teacher's appearance, such as their skin colour, eyes, or weight. We are always pleased when students express an interest in each other's languages, however, it is impolite to mimic another person's language. There are children from many different countries who are missing their relatives and homes. In class, I ask students not to say they hate another country, because it may be another child's home.
Arrival and Pick-up
Bus students arrive between 8:05-8:15. Students who walk should arrive between 8:15-8:25. They can play in their section of the playground until the bell to go inside rings at 8:20.
If you are picking up your child, please stay out of the bus lane until after the buses have left. Then, you can come to meet your child in front of the school.
Parents may not go on the school buses with their child.
Your child will need a lunch, a snack, and a water bottle each day. Please do NOT give your child anything with nuts (including peanut oil or peanut butter.) Also, students are not allowed to have shellfish, due to allergies.
Please give your child a reusable spoon and fork/chopsticks to use at school.
If you want to order school lunches for your child, there are two choices for ordering:
PEI School Food Program - This program delivers healthy food to your child's classroom. There is a two week menu that has a vegetarian option each day. Your child may get this food, even if you can not pay for it. We want every child to be able to have a healthy meal. These meals are ordered two weeks at a time. Please check the dates of the meals you have ordered. You will need to create an account and give your child's student ID number. Your teacher can give that to you.
Spring Park Lunches - With this program you can order white or chocolate milk for your child. You can also order food three times a week from here (Dominoes, Subway, & Pita Pit). You must also create an account for this program and the fees are listed.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
Every morning, this song is played. Students must stand still. They may sing if they want to.
