Hello Parents,

Another great week in Badger Land! Students enjoyed their final round of dance lessons, Socratic Seminars, ecosystem projects, preparing mock trials, learning about Mesoamerican civilizations, writing narratives, a fun day of electives, a visit from the PLC Robotic Team, and more!

Next week is state testing. Be sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep, has plenty of water and snacks, and arrives to school on time. Please try to drop off your student by 8:20am. School starts promptly at 8:25. Students are not allowed to have cell phones, air pods, or Smart watches on their person during testing. Please remind students to have their devices on silent and stored in their backpacks. For additional testing information, please see below.

We know state testing can add extra strain on our students, so we have 3 Spirit Days planned to give students some fun to look forward to! Tuesday is  “Big Blue Bash” (wear blue), Wednesday is “Adam Sandler” Day, and Thursday is “CAMS in the Sand” (beach theme). We conclude the week with our amazing ASB School Dance! See below for Dance FAQ.

CAMS One Day for Education

Thank you to the families that have already contributed! We are currently at 17% of our goal so we need your help! If every family gives just $15, we would surpass our goal!

FAQ: Deep Sea Disco ASB School Dance - April 25

Q: When and where is the Dance?

A: The ASB School Dance will be at the Boys and Girls Club located up the street from CAMS: 115 Woodward Ave. The dance is Thursday, April 25, 6:30-8:45pm. Doors will open at 5:45pm.

Q: How can my child purchase a ticket?

A: Tickets are sold Tu, W, and Th during lunch and are $15. TCA/BV students can purchase tickets from the CAMS front office. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20. Cash or checks made out to TCA.

Q: What is the latest my child can arrive at the dance?

A: Admission to the dance closes at 7pm. We will not let students enter the dance past 7:00pm.

Q: Where do I drop my student off for the dance?

A: To enter the dance or purchase a ticket, please utilize the front entrance of the Boys and Girls Club at 115 Woodward Avenue. Doors open at 5:45pm. The dance will begin at 6:30pm.

Q: Where do I pick up my child at the end of the dance?

A: We will dismiss students at 8:45pm. Students will exit out the West side door which faces the Boys and Girls Club parking lot. Please park and wait for your child outside of the Boys and Girls Club. All students will exit the dance out the west-facing door. For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to walk to your car if you are parked on the street. Please park and meet your child at the west exit.

Q: What kind of music will be played?

A: All music is school-appropriate. We carefully select songs that students will recognize and enjoy, but have clean lyrics.  For the past few weeks, students have been learning dance routines to songs like Footloose, Electric Slide, Do the Hustle, and more! When the DJ plays these songs, all of the students go out on the floor and dance! Knowing dance moves helps all students get involved and have fun!

Q: Is there slow dancing?

A: No! We want students to have good, clean fun with their friends so all songs will be upbeat to get everyone up and dancing in large groups.

Q: Are students allowed to come as a couple on a “date”?

A: No! We want everyone to come as friends. We do not allow dating or PDA (public displays of affection).

Q: Are students allowed to bring a guest?

A: No. The Dance is only for students in grades 7 or 8 currently enrolled at either CAMS or TCA/BV. No siblings, relatives, or friends from a school other than Classical Academy Middle School or The Classical Academy TK-8 campus in Escondido, will be allowed to attend.

Q: What do students need to bring?

A: Backpacks, bags, and purses are not allowed and will be stored away if a student does bring them. No outside food or drink is allowed. We will provide plenty of food and drinks for students to enjoy. Cell phones are ok, but we encourage students to keep them in pockets so they can enjoy time with their friends.

Q: Is there a dress code?

A: Yes, school dress code still applies. The theme is “Deep Sea Disco” so students can dress up and have fun, but the CAMS dress code is still in effect. See Handbook for detailed Dress Code

Q: What if my student doesn’t want to dance, should they come?

A: YES! The dance is super fun for all! Students do not have to dance. There will be fun music to listen to, friends to hang out with, lots of food, a photo booth, lawn games, and a movie to watch.

Q: Is there adequate supervision?

A: YES! There will be at least 10 staff members present at all times as well as parent volunteers.

CAASPP Testing

Classical Academy Middle School will be running our annual state testing for a few weeks in April and May. The CAST test will be delivered to 8th graders the week of May 7th and the CAASPP English and Math tests as well as the 7th grade Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will be the week of April 23rd. (We may have additional makeup days as the need arises.) More details about the testing schedule will be sent out next month.

California public charter schools are required to administer these assessments. Our achievement results and participation rate are significant factors in evaluating our school's effectiveness and reauthorizing our charter every five years.

We are required to test 95% of our school population minimally.  In the past, we did not meet the required participation and, as a result, were penalized on the California School Dashboard. We missed the minimum participation by a few students. Every student's participation is important.

Parent Feedback Requested - LCAP Survey (survey error corrected)

All California Public Schools must develop an annual Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) that aligns with their yearly budget in collaboration with all stakeholders. The Classical Academies values and input from parents, guardians, students, community members, and employees. Please complete this optional survey to help us gather important information about student achievement as we prepare our charters' goals, actions, and budget priorities. *If you have more than one student in our program, please take the survey once for each student.

Weekly Events

Each week, we are recognizing students who go ABOVE and BEYOND in demonstrating one of the 8 Keys of Excellence. Students who are recognized as going above and beyond get to put a star up on our Above & Beyond wall, and get to be celebrated in front of the whole school during morning announcements. We want to develop a school culture where students are kind, determined, have a growth mindset, have integrity, help others, speak with good purpose, take ownership, make the most of opportunities, etc., so we want to celebrate students when we see them doing those things.

Grace : Habit of Self-Direction

Grace consistently works well with others and seeks to do the right thing.  She is truly a pleasure to have in class!

- Mr. V

Ahlia Miller: Habit of Craftsmanship

Ahlia went above and beyond during our Natural Hazards project by designing and constructing a "shake table" to test the stability of a structure meant to withstand earthquakes. This accomplishment was above and beyond the requirements of the project and demonstrated Ahlia's habits of craftsmanship and self-motivation.

- Mrs. Heath

🐠 What's this....

If you are reading this congratulations! You found our surprise giveaway within the Buzz! The first 3 students to message Mrs. Bianca the codeword  "Disco" on Schoology will receive a prize. Good luck!

Each week we will be highlighting a different class/staff member to learn more about the classes happening here at CAMS.  This week, we're checking in on Mrs. Valdez's 3 period 8th grade SDL class.

A little about Mrs. Valdez

I have been at CAMS for 1.5 years. I enjoy spending time with my family or going to theme parks!

A note from Mrs. Valdez...

I teach SDL and I love being able to assist students in all subjects. My students love to challenge and be challenged. Building connections with students is very important to me in order to best support them as a whole. Super grateful to have a wonderful group of student this year.

Q & A with the students...

What do you like about Mrs. Valdez?

Jack: She is a really nice teacher and she can help you with all the things you need to get caught up on.

Jasmine: She is really nice and when you need help she is there to help you.

Havana: I like that she is really encouraging and very relaxed. She always encourages us to do our work but is very nice about it and is always there for us.

What do you like about SDL ?

Jack: It is a fun class and you get to get caught up on all the work that you may be behind on.

Jasmine: That you can work on all your classes because sometimes I need extra time to finish work and I am able to finish it in SDL.

Havana: I Like that it is kind of like a free period to help you get caught up on your other classes. For example if I have a Math test coming up I can use the period to study and prepare more for it.

What is something that you have learned in this class?

Jack: How to use your time wisely.

Jasmine: If I am stuck on a question it is ok to ask for help with the question.

Havana: I have learned alot of different things about all the subjects because Mrs. Valdez helps me with my notes and helps me to understand the material more.

Medication Policy for 2023/2024 school year

(click for more info)

If your student will require medication at school, at any time during the year, please print the required medication form here and turn it into the front office. We are not able to administer any medication (prescription or over-the-counter), without a doctor's signature, and the medication must be in the original container. Additionally, if your student will be carrying medication, you still need to fill out the medication form, have it signed my a doctor, and your student also needs to fill out the self-carry medication form. If your student requires an EPI PEN to be used on campus the following form must be filled out and returned to campus. This will better allow us to assist your student with possible reactions and side effects of your students allergies and gives us an action plan to care for your student properly.

Please note: We cannot accept any medication form for the 2022-2023 school year if it is dated before July 1, 2023.  All forms must be signed & dated by your doctor after this date to be active for the school year.

Cell Phone Policy

(click for more info)

Hello Awesome CAMS Parents!

One of the things I have most appreciated about CAMS as a parent, teacher, and administrator, is the commitment to having students engaged in class and with each other during breaks instead of their cell phones!  Yes these devices can serve as excellent vehicles  for communication and learning, however especially in the junior high setting, they often prove far more distracting and problematic on many levels.

As we enter our second unit, we are tightening our enforcement and appreciate your partnership in this process.  The expectation for students is:

If you need to get in touch with your student, please call our front office at 760-520-6800.  We are very happy to deliver a message, have them come to the office to talk, etc.

If your student does not keep to this policy we will begin the following process:

Again, thank you for your support on this important piece of our school culture of student learning, focus, safety, and engagement!

Hello Parents and Happy Spring!,

This month, I am providing our school community with resources and information about social media safety and screen time balance!

As technology and online trends are continually evolving, we know that digital safety will always be an important topic of conversation for our youth. Our hope for our students at CAMS is that they will learn to navigate screens with boundaries and balance!

The counseling department at The Classical Academies is passionate about giving our parents the guidance and tools to support their children to have a healthy relationship with screens. Our podcast on Parenting in the Digital Age is a great resource with tips on navigating the digital landscape in your home.

Additionally, I would like to encourage you to host an entertainment screen-free week in your home sometime this month, as a healthy experiment to show the positive effects that come from having time away from relying on an entertainment screen! The organization, Screen Free, provides a variety of ideas that families can incorporate into a week free of entertainment screens. Below is their list of 101 screen free ideas and further helpful resources! As an added benefit, if your student commits to a week without screens (for entertainment purposes), they can fill out this reflection and have you, their parent, email it to me at aatkins@classicalacademy.com, for a 4oz free voucher to Menchies!

Screen Free Week: Resources for taking a break from entertainment screens

Lastly, I would like to share with you the Organization for Social Media Safety. This organization contains articles for families in effort to inform them of recent happenings regarding social media and provide tips to help support and protect our children online. A link to the website's articles and resources can be found below.
