Level 1
Principles of Health Science(1 Credit) Grades 9-10
This introductory course provides students with an overview of the healthcare industry, including careers, medical terminology, anatomy, ethics, and patient care concepts. Students will explore the skills and knowledge required for various health professions, preparing them for advanced health science courses and future careers in healthcare.
Level 2
Medical Terminology (1 Credit) Grades 10-12
This course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, indlucing prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining and singular/plural forms, as well as medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
Level 3
Health Science Theory (1 Credit) Grades 10-12
This course provides students the opportunity for comprehensive study of human anatomy and physiology, medical terms, introduction to basic patient care skills, AHA First Aid and CPR certification, as well as health career exploration.
Must take Biology first
Anatomy and Physiology (1 Credit) Grades 11-12
This course is a hands-on survey of the structures and functions of the human body, including investigating the body's responses to forces, maintenance of homeostasis, electrical interactions, transport systems, and energy processes. It includes laboratory investigation and fieldwork using approriate scientific inquiry.
Must take Biology and Chemistry first
Level 4
Certified Medical Assistant (1 Credit) Grades 11-12
This course prepares students for a career as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by providing training in clinical, administrative, and patient care skills. Students will learn medical terminology, anatomy, vital signs, lab procedures, and electronic health records. Hands-on practice and real-world experience prepare students for certification exams and employment in healthcare settings.
Practicum of Health Science (2 Credits) Grade 12
This course provides the student with a unique opportunity to explore a variety of health care careers. Students develop skills while training under the direct supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. The first twelve weeks of the course are spent in class in preparation for the clinical rotation intern experience. The remainder of the year students alternate between related classroom instruction and serving as an unpaid intern in a hospital or other health care facility.
