Today marked our last day at the center, with a gentle rain providing a soothing backdrop to our activities. Owen and Nicholas devoted their time to assisting the center's large community of dancers in choreographing the 科目三 dance, which they will perform at next Wednesday's carnival. The dancers were fully engaged, practicing their steps with focus and determination, as Owen and Nicholas offered guidance and encouragement.

The art group, though slightly smaller than usual, was managed by Daniel, Claire, and Avril, who facilitated one-on-one drawing sessions. Each artist received personalized attention, allowing them to fully express their creativity and hone their skills. The room was filled with a quiet sense of concentration.

In the sports group, Max, Aurelius, and George enjoyed lively conversations while playing numerous rounds of ping pong. The rapid back-and-forth of the ball, along with the boys' laughter and good-natured banter, created an energetic and joyful atmosphere.

At the end of the day, there was a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie among all the participants. Despite the rain, everyone had a productive and enjoyable final day at the center. Each group worked hard towards their respective goals, resulting in a day filled with creativity, teamwork, and fun.

Today was our second visit to Huiling Autism this term. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staffs, and split off into 2 groups: art and dance. In the art group under the accompaniment of Ms. Pascual, we guided the children through drawing various images using crayons and colored markers. They seemed to enjoy the creative freedom and had big smiles on their faces the whole time, engaging in lively conversations. The dance group continued teaching the dance routine "科目三", and the people had a fantastic time practicing their moves, their joy and enthusiasm for dance raising the atmosphere. The most memorable experience for me was attempting to fly kites with the members. Initially, due to light wind conditions and our own inexperience, we struggled to get the kites airborne. However, after several tries providing encouragement to each other, I finally managed to launch my kite into the sky. Our excitement as we saw the kite rise higher and higher was truly heartwarming. This visit was very enriching and we cherished it greatly.

The day began on a bright, warm, and generally beautiful note. Upon our arrival at the Huiling Autism Center, we took a brief 10-minute break. Subsequently, we divided ourselves into different groups. Nicholas and Owen were assigned to the dancing group, while Max, George, and Aurelius were part of the sports group. Avril and Clare joined the drawing group. Today, we were accompanied by Ms. Pascual, who participated in the painting group. In the dancing group, Nicholas and Owen instructed the members on how to dance to the rhythm of 科目三. Their performance left a lasting impression on the center's representative, who expressed a desire for us to perform this song in the future. The drawing group had a fantastic time, engaging in lively conversations, playful interactions, and creative drawing sessions with the members. The sports group, taking advantage of the lovely weather, ventured outside the center to the nearby park. In summary, it was an enriching experience, one that we are eager to repeat in the future.

This week was our first visit after the CNY break. After we arrived at the center, the organiser informed us that since International Women’s Day was in 2 days, we’ll be folding small flower bouquets for another local autism center for women. When we arrived with the necessary materials, we listened attentively as the organiser gave us a more in depth explanation of the mission, goals and purpose of the Huiling Autism Center. The organiser began by expressing gratitude for our presence and support, emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive spaces and opportunities for individuals with autism who often face additional challenges and barriers in society. The mission of the Huiling Autism Center was to provide a nurturing and empowering environment for people with autism, enabling them to develop their skills, gain independence, and lead fulfilling lives. He explained that folding these bouquets symbolized the beauty and strength within each woman, just like a delicate flower blooming against all odds. It was a way to show solidarity, reminding them that they were cherished and valued.

Soon after his inspiring speech we set to work, carefully folding each paper flower with love and care. The room was filled with a sense of unity, and it was heartwarming to witness the collective efforts of everyone, knowing that our small actions would bring joy and inspiration to the women at this centre. Leaving the center that day, we felt a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude.

The day began with a visit to the administrative hub of the autism center amidst a chilly drizzle. The coordinator enlightened us about the center's objectives and shared inspiring stories. We then proceeded to the center and split into three groups: sports, dancing, and drawing. Due to its smaller size, the sports group later joined us for the dance session. We taught the center's members the rhythmic steps of "科目三," observing significant progress. The drawing group collaborated on creating beautiful art pieces. As the day concluded, we returned to our starting point, carrying with us the warmth of shared experiences and eager for our next visit.

As Chinese New Year was approaching, we decided to celebrate it early with them by playing some traditional Chinese games together and having a small performance. The first game we played was a modified version of the traditional dart-throwing game, where we took turns throwing mini sticks into tall red buckets placed at about 2 meters away. The atmosphere was very lively as we cheered each other on with enthusiasm, giving those who successfully landed darts in the buckets high-fives and words of encouragement. The second game was equally as fun, where we had a box with 10 balls inside strapped to our waist and jumped around to get them out through a small at the center of each of the boxes. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as the community came together to experience Chinese New Year traditions in a supportive environment, allowing us to connect with our friends as the center through a competition in a spirit of fun. After an exciting game session, we moved on to the performances. Haoran began with a captivating piano performance, which was followed by several engaging dances and songs. Overall, this visit was very meaningful, allowing us to relax while forming meaningful bonds with our friends at the center.

The day started off on a positive note as we arrived slightly early and took a moment to rest before diving into a fantastic day with the individuals at Huiling Autism Center. Both Nicholas and Allen bravely joined the dance group, and despite initial nerves, quickly formed strong connections with the other members, resulting in a truly memorable experience.

Meanwhile, the arts group had an absolute blast. Owen partnered with one of the individuals and together they created an incredible abstract painting, while others enjoyed expressing themselves through colorful pencils.

The sports group opted not to engage in physical activities in the start as the members of the autism center were tired, but instead came together to have meaningful conversations and collaborate on making bags, which proved to be beneficial for the entire center. According to George, a total of 58 bags were made by the sports group, showcasing their dedication and teamwork. In the end, the sport team played some sports to finish the day off on a good note.

Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable and eventful day. I am already eagerly looking forward to returning for another fulfilling experience at Huiling Autism Center.

December 6, 2023

Today we arrived at Huiling Autism Center under a cloudless sky, our objective today being to have a relaxing stroll with them along a path beside a river and some greenery. After they finished their lunch, we left for the route. Although it was quite awkward at first to start a discussion, we quickly managed to overcome this barrier and engaged in meaningful conversation with them, allowing us to get to know them better and familiarize ourselves to prepare for the activities in the afternoon. When we returned, it was coincidentally the time for their midday nap, allowing us to briefly recharge with a lunch break. When we returned, we split into three groups: Dance, drawing and sports. In the drawing/ painting group, I was particularly amazed by a detailed drawing of a cat, which I think can be partly attributed to Helen's exceptional teaching. Both the dance and sports group also showed remarkable enthusiasm and maintained high energy levels during their activities. Overall, this session was great, and we’re looking forward to returning in January.

November 29, 2023

We began our day under clear blue skies, the warmth was unusual for the season. Upon arriving at the Huiling Autism Center, the coordinator warmly welcomed us,. He informed us that after they finished eating, they would happily join us for a relaxing stroll around the grounds. During our walk, we enjoyed engaging in meaningful discussions with them, getting to know them more deeply and forming authentic connections. The time was expertly managed to ensure we returned to the Center as their scheduled naptime began, allowing us a brief respite which we appreciated. After our short break, our group rejoined the reenergized group, eager to participate in our chosen activities: dancing, sports, and art. The dancing group demonstrated remarkable skill, moving enthusiastically through song after song. Meanwhile, the art group left me in awe of their creative works. One art piece in particular stood out to me as excelling in anything I could create. I believe this can be attributed to Warren's exceptional teaching. According to the sports group, their experience was amazing. Undoubtedly the largest group, they headed to the back of the centre to enjoy badminton and table tennis. Max, one of the participants, described the atmosphere as brimming with laughter and smiles, with people running around enjoying the swings while waiting for their turn to play. Overall, this week's experience provided an amazing bonding opportunity with the individuals at the centre.

November 22, 2023

This morning we embarked upon our journey to the Huiling Autism Center with an attentive and inquisitive mindset. When we arrived, we placed our belongings in an available space where a staff was diligently crafting homemade soap. As a majority of the people were calmly slumbering, we had the opportunity to greet the handful who were alert at that hour. Today’s objective was to introduce ourselves, have a fun mini performance and play some sports at the end.

After they’ve awakened, we moved into a larger space and stood together in a circle, where we, one by one, introduced our names and our hobbies. There was one person who said he really liked cars. While most of this mini introduction session went smoothly, we noticed that a lot of them were quite hesitant and shy to speak, and we wonder if we can cultivate the confidence and also a safe environment for them to express themselves in future sessions. The most memorable part of our visit was undoubtedly the performances, where we danced “Super Shy”, sang “Last Christmas”, “小幸运”, and had Tony play “萱草花” on the guitar. Even though most of the performances were great, we did notice some dialogues of discouragement being exchanged between them, and speculated if this was the cause of some of their lack of confidence.

After the performance, we split into two groups, one group playing badminton while the other group played table tennis. During our games, a girl gave us each a printed template of mountains and flowers that was colored by some vibrant colors. Another person kept asking us about what types of cars we liked, which we tried to fulfill by cycling through a list of about 10 cars. We decided that we might bring some printed Lamborghini & ferrari coloring sheets for him in future sessions. We learnt a lot about them today and are eager to visit again in 2 weeks!

Today, we arrived at the autism center with an optimistic and ready-to-observe attitude. Prior to our visit, we had communicated with the leaders of Ya'En in my own time, and we were given permission to eventually teach groups of children ourselves in specialised groups.

Avril, Nicholas, Owen, Claire and I were assigned to a group that focused on social interaction through arts. Throughout this session, we paid close attention to our partners’ emotional control, task initiation, social interaction, and cognitive abilities. We printed out colouring sheets that specifically catered to our partners’ enjoyments. For example we printed out colouring sheets of Ferari racecars for one particular person who had an interest in racing cars.

On the other side, George, Aurelius, and Max were busy with the music and sports groups. They were paired with partners who particularly enjoyed active games and spent the day accompanying them. They played badminton together and Aurelius had the opportunity to show off his piano skills, something which they particularly enjoyed.

It was, once again, a successful links session. We all hope to return back in the next following weeks.

Today was the first day that Links B went to the Huiling Autism Center. When we first walked in, the staff and residents all greeted us happily and with lots of excitement. They had a lot to prepare for the upcoming mid autumn festival so we were there to help them finish their tasks, and get to know them a bit in the process. It was a very memorable experience talking to all of them, and this visit gave us a chance to learn about their experiences and connect with the people. We were split up into 2 groups, 1 group helped to put cards with washing information into card sleeves, and the other group helped them to punch holes in bags that they needed for mid autumn. We noticed that the center likes to give them lots of easy tasks to help stimulate their brains and give them something to focus on. Something that surprised me is that they made recycled soap bars out of left over soap bars that hotels give them. They shave off all of the outer layer, sterilize it, then press it back into a bar form. These daily tasks help to keep them occupied and helps with their ASD. Since there was a lot of work to be finished today, we didn’t get to perform or do as much bonding as wse would have liked, but while doing the tasks, we spoke with the residents to get an understanding of what types of activities they liked, what their english levels were and other interesting facts about them. They all had such positive and contagious energy that made the entire trip very memorable.

Embarking on the first ever links trip for the year, team B recently had the incredible opportunity to visit the Huiling Autism Center for adults. Nestled in the heart of our community, this center serves as a haven for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our visit not only gave us a chance to introduce ourselves and contribute a positive first impression through our performances but also allowed us to connect with the residents, learn about their experiences, and create lasting memories. As we arrived at the Huiling Autism Center, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and residents. Their cheerful smiles and genuine enthusiasm set the tone for an unforgettable day ahead. Before our performances, we had the privilege of introducing ourselves to the residents and learning about their unique stories. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the performances we prepared for the residents. We sang our recently learned song “大海“ to the residents with our very own student Aurelius playing the piano. Additionally, we had a spontaneous performance from myself, Claire, Nicholas, and Max where we sang 24k Magic to the residents that ended in laughter and applause. Our visit to the Huiling Autism Center left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. Even though this was our first of many trips to come, the experiences we shared and the lessons we learned will forever shape our perspectives.

Today marks our eleventh and final session of Links. We invited Mr. Stewart, Olivia Wong and Audrey Lau onto our team as we needed more members to participate for the activities we prepared. After having our final meal at the Links location, we folded blue paper airplanes with the Huiling residents in alignment with “蓝色行动,让爱不孤单”, an activity that all Huiling centers around China were doing on the day. We took them to 桃花湖公园 where we took pictures and flew the airplanes. We also did two activities, 投壶 (an activity where participants competed to throw sticks into cans) and 接龙 (an activity where participants form groups and attempt to transport a ball from one end to a cup at the other end with a limited number of tracks). Finally, because it began to rain a little heavily, we headed back to the center, where we prepared some performances for the Huiling residents. This included Kaylee’s dance, Justin and Sebastian’s piano and clarinet duet of Innocent (Castle in the Sky), Nini’s rhythm game performance, and a collective sing-along to 感恩的心. We ended our final session by taking more pictures and saying farewell to the residents. It was a very meaningful day. The entire Links experience has really opened our eyes to the world and led to unique experiences that we will cherish and remember.

March 15, 2023

Today was our penultimate links session. We began the session as usual, by arriving late in the morning and conducting a briefing with the head of the centre Mr. Xu. After a short break, we returned in the afternoon to hold a meeting, where discussed our plans for the next and final session, which would act as the culmination and climax of the links program for this centre.

The meeting was extremely productive, as we were able to narrow down our exact timings and scheduling for the final day.

Afterwards, after the residents of the centre finished their afternoon rest, we commenced the usual routine activities. One group of students engaged in a singing and dancing practices session with the residents, while another group of students assisted with the sports and physical activities. The third group accompanied the residents in an art making session. The activities lasted for the duration of the afternoon, and we all, as usual, ended this session of community service feeling productive and fulfilled.

Today marks our ninth session of Links and our third in semester 2. We welcomed CM David onto our team. Then, we went to Huiling and had lunch nearby. A particularly memorable moment was when we celebrated Jaden and Kaylee’s birthdays (which were both the day before). Afterward, we began a collaborative activity with 浙江工商大学 students by helping the participants draw self-portraits in watercolor or colored pens. Later, Ashy led part of the team on an origami crane-making spree whilst the rest taught the residents how to fold paper airplanes. It was exciting and fun when we all got to test fly our paper airplanes and see who could fly them furthest. The session ended with Ashy gifting our handmade paper cranes to the residents. Overall, it was a very eventful day!

This links session was our eighth at the Huiling Autism centre. We arrived late in the morning at 11:30 to engage in discussions and work out arrangements with Mr Xu, the director of the facility. After a fruitful meeting with the staff and a quick break, we returned back to the centre to see many residents, freshly awakened from their daily nap and extremely excited to engage in a fun afternoon of engaging activities.

As per our usual arrangements, we split into three groups to facilitate the three types of activities offered during the afternoon period. One group played table tennis with the residents for a nice afternoon of exercise and training, another group accompanied the residents in making art, and the third group facilitated the residents in their fun weekly singing and dancing lesson. It was, as usual, an extremely packed and entertaining afternoon of a large variety of activities, and the day concluded with a warm goodbye from the residents and staff of the centre.

February 15, 2023

Today marks our seventh session of Links and our first one in semester 2. We welcomed a new member, Ashy, and CM Nora onto our team and met shortly to discuss our plans for the day. Then, we went to Huiling and had lunch nearby. Afterward, we met with the director Mr. Xu and discussed our planned activities for the afternoon. This included teaching English, art, sports (ping pong), and singing/dancing. Our group split up into each of the various activities and enjoyed the afternoon with the residents. During that time, we learned a lot about the residents at the center and played supportive roles in their routines and activities. On the way back, we discussed our plans for the next few sessions.

What primarily stuck with us was how welcoming and friendly the residents were. The continued experience of helping the residents and interacting with them also reminded us that they are people and shouldn’t be treated any differently. There shouldn’t be stigmatization of people on the autism spectrum and we hope that in the future, communities can strive to be more and more inclusive of such populations.

November 23, 2022

Today was our fifth session at the Huiling Center. As it was going to be Thanksgiving the following day, our Links group gathered at 10:15 in the morning at school. prepared several performances for the Center, and left at 11:00. We arrived at the Center at 11:30 and had lunch.

In the afternoon, we joined the people at the Center on a half-hour trip around the neighborhood, resuming photography sessions with some of the residents. We enjoyed the experience, and the residents also enjoyed learning how to take pictures using their phone cameras. Afterwards, we returned to the Center, where we were joined by university students who hosted a presentation on Thanksgiving (and expressing thanks to others). In between the presentation, we performed our various songs, including a clarinet and piano duet (performed by Sebastian and Justin) version of Merry Go Round of Life and Innocent by Joe Hisaishi, 飞雪玉花 on the flute by Kaylee, and a Thanksgiving-related song Hallelujah with our entire group singing along. We also participated in games that the university students hosted, and also joined in on a final sing-along to 感恩的心. The day ended with another group photo with the residents. Overall, it was an eventful session at the Huiling Autism Center!

November 16, 2022

Our Links session today was rather short. We arrived at the destination a few hours before noon, only to realise that the morning activities we have planned were cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. Despite this setback, we adjusted our plan and carried an exciting and engaging links session!

We took a long two hour break for lunch in the area surrounding the links location, before returning back at approximately two in the afternoon. Then, we split into our teams to carry out our respective links activities.  One team led the autism centre residents in a fantastic dance routine, while another team played a few rounds amazing of table tennis with the residents. It was truly amazing to see the residents being active and exercising, maintaining their physical health. Once again, it was very much reassuring and inspiring to see such a holistic approach by the autism centre staff to ensure the full health of their residents, both in the mental and physical aspect.

At the same time, one of our teams engaged in art activities, including drawing and painting, with the residents We would mostly watch and provide encouragement as the residents carried out the art-making process by themselves, only occasionally asking for our assistance. The strong interest and passion expressed by the residents as they made art made a deep impression on all of us. To see the residents of the centre being as engaged and devoted as they were towards art was an extremely insightful experience.

Overall, this links session, though shorter than expected, was both successful and rewarding to all of us. We look forward to the next session!

November 9, 2022

Today was our third session at the Huiling Autism Center. We met beforehand and discussed the events we were going to conduct at the center. In order to maximize our volunteering time, we left at 10:10 and arrived at the center at approximately 10:45. In the morning, we assisted the residents by participating in activities such as handing out flyers for the Huiling Center to nearby residents and pedestrians. Then, we took a lunch break and resumed activities at 1:30 in the afternoon. We split into two groups, with one leading a painting and art activity and the other leading a dancing and music appreciation group. Both groups enjoyed interacting with the residents. The art group conducted one-on-one painting tutorials on various objects of interest, including scenery, people, and cars. It was an enjoyable activity and afterwards, the students and residents all joined together in the dancing activity. There was a lot of hype and we had a great time choosing music with strong beats. Nearing the end, we also introduced English songs like “Let it go”, “Timber” and “Shut up and dance with me”. We ended the day at 3:10, and headed back to school.

In general, interacting felt easier over time. We were slightly nervous and it was a little awkward in the morning, however it improved much during the afternoon. We also discussed with the staff at the center about regularizing our activities for next time we come, and are discussing choreographing a dance for the residents to learn. Overall, it was an eventful and exciting day!

October 26, 2022

Today was our second visit to the autism centre. We arrived slightly later in the afternoon and met with the staff once we arrived. We engaged in a quick discussion pertaining to the scheduling and logistics of our future visits while the residents of the centre were still resting. Once the residents woke up, we began to commence the brief yet engaging and exciting host of activities we had prepared. Some of us participated in painting activities with the residents, assisting them as they exercised their creativity and expression in making art. It was truly a memorable experience seeing the residents as passionate as focused as they were on their tasks, and being so well oriented with the complex process of drawing and painting. Some of us participated in sports with the residents, playing a few fun rounds of ping pong. It was wonderful seeing how dynamic, interesting and active the lives of the residents of the autism centre was, with everyone present being happy, relaxed, and at ease. Despite the brevity of this visit, it was still extremely productive and memorable, and the next visit will surely be even more exciting.

October 12, 2022

Today, we conducted our first session of community service at the Huiling Autism Centre. We arrived at 11:00 AM and were greeted by a friendly and passionate welcome from Mr. Xu, a volunteer worker at the centre. Mr. Xu proceeded to provide us with a brief overview of the history and mission of the centre, about how the goal of the centre was to train the daily life and social skills of those on the autistic spectrum by creating a rich and structured lifestyle for its residents.

We were also briefed on the excellent work of the CIS students of the past years at the Huiling centre. We could feel the strong bond and sturdy relationship between CIS and the Huiling centre. It was extremely motivating to hear that the centre was lacking in volunteer workers and that we provided a vital opportunity for the residents to practice their skills in social interactions. We were then led on a tour through the building. We were introduced to the various different rooms in which residents would participate in various activities, such as art, exercise, and eating. It was quite reassuring to see that the residents were living a structured life while engaging in varied and exciting activities, living an enjoyable, relaxing, yet also challenging lifestyle.

After a short break for lunch, we returned and had the opportunity to interact with the residents. We began by introducing ourselves one by one, before viewing two engaging performances by the residents, then delivering a few of our own. It was quite amazing to see that the residents, though perhaps possessing lower than average social skills, still had personalities of their own, and could sing, dance, and enjoy themselves passionately. A few members of our team even had opportunities to engage in one on one conversations with the residents, and such members were able to quickly develop friendly relationships with them.

This was a successful day of service at the Huiling Centre, and even more successes will undoubtedly come in the future!

March 9, 2022

Upon our arrival to the Huiling Autism Center, we were once again greeted by warm welcomes and highfives from the autistic people. We split into different groups again, with minor changes to the groupings: 1 group fan dancing (Natalie, Desmond); 1 group arts and origami (Cloudia, Eden, Katie); 1 group ping pong (Albert, Alex, Aidan, Justin). During the morning dance session, I revised the part of dance that I had taught them in the previous session for the first half of the session and taught them the next part of the dance after the break. The students were once again, quick learners and were particularly eager to learn how to maneuver the fans. It was a heartwarming sight to see their attempts and see their efforts gradually contribute to their success.

For lunch, we went to a Japanese restaurant nearby where we ate Japanese dishes, it was an amazing lunch.

In the afternoon, we stayed in the same afternoon groups as the previous trip: 1 group teaching English; 1 group singing. For the English class, there were only 3 students, which was perfect for us to undergo 1:1 tutoring sessions where we could control the pace of the session according to the varying levels of the students. They were exceptionally wonderful students and were mindful of reaping the most benefits of the sessions, with only taking a 3 minute break (we proposed a longer break but they insisted on learning the most in our time together). They were able to remember the vocabulary that we taught last session and had an easier time pronouncing the words. At the end of the session, we watched a showcase of the students singing 《我相信》and a fan dance performance by one of the members 美玲. These performances were really heartwarming, and it was truly remarkable to watch these students shine in their element:)

Highlights from our Huiling team:

Cloudia: It was really sweet that the students remembered me, and it was also fun when I was invited to dance with them in their dance/singing performance.

Alex: The Mandarin singing session was really engaging, where I was able to assist in teaching the students the pronunciation of the characters in the song.

Albert: I found the experience enlightening, because I was able to empathise with the autistic people; Learning about their disability at the same time taking this opportunity to realise their strengths

Desmond: It was really heartwarming that they remembered me and also when they invited me onto the stage. I felt really honored that I was able to participate in the activity and provide them with fun and enjoyment.

Aidan: It was very enjoyable to bring joy to other people, whilst also reciprocating joy from them.

Justin: I felt really honored to be able to teach them to sing songs that we enjoy as well as have fun in the process with them.

Katie: Today’s session was very fun, and I was able to have a more engaging session due to having a 1:1 session where I was able to tutor a student individually.

Eden: This session was more prepared and engaging, as one of the students (Marcy) that I tutored was more open to communicating in English than she was in the previous session. It was also more effective than the last time, with us having a more relaxing to teach and learn more about them on a more personal level.

Natalie Cheung: It is really enlightening to see the progress in fan dancing that is able to be accomplished by the autistic students. They are exceptionally attentive and keen on details, which is a valuable quality of theirs. The English session was better executed than the previous session, as I felt that my student (Lola) was able to absorb information more effectively. Even though it was a bit tiring for me to repeat the same set of vocabulary for 20 minutes, it was rewarding to see that she has made great progress and is able to distinguish and pronounce all the words in the vocabulary that she has learnt this lesson and the previous. During session, her leg had started to cramp and I had to help her massage, which got me worried for a bit (eventually she got better).

March 2, 2022

Today was our third trip to the Huiling Autism Center. The previous visits were hosted by the center staff, and today was our first day where we were the organizers of the activities that were going to happen for the day (also had a guest teacher, Mr Wro to join us). Upon our arrival at 10 am, we split ourselves into 3 groups: First group (Natalie, Albert, Justin, Desmond) was in charge of teaching the students how to fan dance; Second group was in charge of engaging in a table tennis session with other members; Third group was in charge of drawing art and doing origami. For the students to learn the dance easier, I made slight adjustments to the dance and broke the dance into a few parts. They were fantastic students and were full of enthusiasm, picking up the moves quickly.

In the afternoon, we split into two groups for lunch: One group (Natalie, Albert, Cloudia, Eden, Katie, Desmond, Mr Wro) went to Burger King for lunch; whilst the other group (Alex, Aidan, Aidan, Eva) went to a Korean BBQ restaurant. After lunch, we commenced with the afternoon activities: One group taught the students beginner English (Natalie, Eden, Katie); the other group taught them to sing a Mandarin song 《我相信》. The students who were in my English were really eager to learn, and we helped them choose their own English names and teach them basic English self-introductory phrases. Interacting with the autistic people was as always, a fulfilling experience due to their friendliness and openness to us.

Some highlights from individual members of our team:

Desmond: It was fun teaching them fan dancing as well as learning about the individuals and their talents at the same time.

Justin: It was nice teaching them singing and watching them enjoy themselves. I really enjoyed teaching them and communicating with them.

Eden: The experience was really good. Particularly during the art session, we were in a nice and relaxing environment where we had the freedom to go at our own pace

Alex: Shicongdeguolaideche (是從德國來的車?) was a question that was constantly asked during the 1 hour conversation I had with one of the members where we exchanged our interest in transportation and F1 cars.

Katie: It was a fun experience where we were able to interact with the students and teach them artistic and English speaking skills.

Albert: It was fun singing mandarin songs with them. It was also heartwarming to watch them grow and learn and have fun. It was a great experience to help empathize with them and learn about ourselves.

Cloudia: gave us a lot of creativity follow slight rules with menial guidelines, creative, positive experience and bonding with them

Natalie: It was a valuable initial experience where I had my first fan dancing session with the autistic people. It was really pleasant to see their smiling faces and their effort they put into learning the dance. I also had an enjoyable time teaching the students spoken beginner English, where I got an understanding of where their English level stands. They have an exceptional learning ethic which I find extremely admirable. Today was really fulfilling and meaningful.

For our final links day, we were all very excited to spend one last day with them. We started the day by doing some origami and constructed a huge tower. After that, we split off into three groups and did ping pong, dancing and painting separately. During our lunch break, we had an opportunity to talk to one of the workers there and learnt a lot more about the situation of people who have mental disabilities in China, as well as learn more about Huiling in general. We all appreciated this in-depth look and all learnt a lot.

In the afternoon, we played some games working together and also distributed some prizes. They were all very happy to receive them. We ended off the day by having a performance. We were all very sad to leave and they were also very upset. We will all treasure the memories we had there and hope that they will remember us fondly.

Today, we took the bus to Huiling Autism Centre, and because we arrived earlier than expected, we helped make paper bags for them. We then split into three groups. One group played table tennis with them and were pleasantly surprised by the skill they displayed. Another group painted beautiful paintings of the 西湖 together. The last group taught them a simple but easy dance. After that, we had a short break then did some origami together. We all folded a paper crane and heart.

After lunch, we had the most exciting activity planned! We had brought some drums for them to play with and taught them a few simple beats that they could play to songs like 小幸運. Although we had originally planned to have a piano accompanying them, the piano there was too soft so we had to play the song through the speakers. To finish the day, we had a short performance. We performed a duet with a piano and violin, and also a dance.

Overall, we had a great day. With the longer amount of time we could spend planning this time, our visit was certainly more productive and we all had a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to going back next week and hope that the next visit will be even more exciting and fun than this one!

Today was filled with laughter, hugs, and the fulfilling sense of unity.

Our day started out with a 45 minute long bus ride, during which the bus buzzed with excitement and anticipation. During the tour around the center, one thing that stuck with us even after the trip was the soap project they had, in which they would cut off and sanitise remains of hotel soap and transform into new soap bars, set to donate to a village.

Our group split into 3 different groups for morning activities: Art, Dance and Sports. The art students accompanied the adults to help with their art projects, which consisted of paintings of sunflowers and plum blossoms. The dance students taught segments of 小蘋果, and sport students taught ping pong. During the afternoon, we all grouped together and practiced a flag dance, which they will be performing sometime after. With sore arms and tired smiles, we proceeded to our last event: the performances. Cheers, claps and songs echoed through the gymnasium. The highlight of our trip was the very last performance, which we all shared the stage and sang 月亮代表我的心.

The day finished as quickly as it started, and so with final embraces and wishes of farewell, we set out to return to the campus. We all are extremely thankful for this rare opportunity and despite our limited time spent in the center and rushed preparations, we look forward to the next time we return and will cherish more that will come.

During this Links session, we requested to leave early and head over to the center in the morning to teach the autistic adults English. Some of the adults were especially clever and had the ability to answer half of the questions we asked. We then proceeded to teaching them complete sentence due to previous demands, and they were such quick learners it was astonishing. After a productive English teaching segment, we left for lunch as the adults relaxed and took a nap. After a while, we returned to the center with a full stomach and spent more time with the adults painting and folding boxes. Overall, it was a great experience bonding with them and I really look forward to going back to the center next year.

Today was really eventful, our group of five split into three groups, Sophie and Adelaide, Jade, Sansan and Dean, and Chaplin. We all focused on engaging in different activities with the adults. Sophie and I painted lovely Christmas painting  with them and it was such a heartwarming experience. The pleased smiles curved upon their lips was such a touching sight. Meanwhile, Jade, Sansan and Dean taught them English and Chaplin became the technician. With satisfaction, we left after two hard hours and rewarded ourselves with snacks at the mall. Overall, this was a special experience and we gained a lot from it.

During our recent visit to the Huiling Center, we spent the entire session teaching adults English since they were extremely interested in that our previous visit. However due to miscommunication, we arrived a lot earlier than the center expected. Hence we were obliged to leave and return after approximately three hours. Although inconvenience was caused, we’ve learnt to clarify with the center beforehand.

After we were finally able to spend time with the adults, we attempted to teach them common phrases in English. Chaplin took the lead in teaching phrases related to sports. Cassandra and Sophie taught them about the days of each week. Meanwhile, I mainly taught the adults country names which surprisingly they were very invested in. Some of the adults were comparably more confident in their English, and they were determined to demonstrate their fluency by sharing their favorite places in the world with us. This impressed us greatly especially since they never received particular education for English.

Overall, we enjoyed educating the adults and we are all very much looking forward to our next visit to the Huiling Center.

This week the Huiling group got the chance to interact with patients in the destination. Adelaide, Sophie, and Chaplin painted beautiful pictures and were able to create strong relationships with the adults. While Cassandra and I were in the other room communicating with other adults and helping the Huiling community make boxes. We were also able to teach some of the adults English and they were very excited to learn more. In conclusion, our team is really enjoying this community service activity and can't wait to see them after the break and hope to dance and sing along with them. ~Jade T

Last Tuesday, Jade, Sophie, Cassandra, Chaplin and Dean went to visit the Huiling Autistic Center. Unfortunately, Adelaide was not able to join us. When we arrived, we were greeted by very welcoming staff member who was very excited to have us. We sat down with them, introduced and talked about what we wanted to do with the patients at this autism center. They loved most of our ideas and we quickly stated interacting with some of the adults at the location. This week each member of our team worked with a patient and helped them draw aspects of Hangzhou to break the ice between us. The adults cooperated really well and were really lovely to interact with. Overall, the experience was amazing and it really opened our eyes to the various communities around China. We are very excited to what this center will bring us this year.  ~Chaplin C.
