What is a Kerf?
The laser burns away a portion of material when it cuts through. This is known as the laser kerf and ranges from 0.08mm – 1mm depending on the material type and other conditional factors. Kerf can be different from machine to machine, and even change on the same machine over time and use. This is why your designs don't always fit well when you go to assemble them.

1.Put a piece of material you want to make a project with in the guide where it feels and fits the way you want pieces to fit together. You will need to remove any masking that came on your product in the small section that you measure, usually a corner. If you will be putting masking or 3M adhesive on parts of your material, measure the material before applying. After measuring, you will find the size your slot needs to be in the design file itself. Use the exact engraved size measurement that is marked on the fit guide in your design - to 0.001 of variation accuracy (1000th of an inch). This will ensure that the design will result in the proper size gap that you need for a perfect product, every time. Using a caliper only tells you part of the story as putting that size into your design will result in items that do not fit together correctly. By making this file on each of your laser cutters, it will be accurate to your machine and material, specifically.

Why are there different versions? The most accurate of these designs is the "center slot", as flex is reduced in this version. You won't be able to insert some materials into this version - like large circles that do not have a corner to enter. The open end slotted files are perfect for those applications. If it becomes tight or binds before reaching the inside edge on the side slot versions, move up a size as you do not want to intentionally make the guide flex - this will give you an inaccurate reading.

(Or move them off to the workable canvas for future use when making that project again with material of a different thickness)
