BTEC Sport Course Overview

Here At CHS, pupils have the opportunity to study for the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, which provides the same UCAS points as 3 A Levels. Grades are awarded as Distinction, Merit and Pass.

Over a two year period, pupils will study 14 units covering a wide variety of topics including Anatomy and Physiology, Injury Prevention in Sport, Practical Sport Performance, Coaching in Sport, Skill Acquisition in Sport and also carry out a Research Project.

Four units are externally assessed; Anatomy & Physiology is a traditional exam, whilst the Fitness Programming, Sport Development and Business in Sport units are case study, open book exams.

The remaining 10 units are internally assessed, in a range of different methods including essays, video evidence, presentations and hosting sporting events.

Over the past 3 years the BTEC course has received outstanding outcomes for all students.

A number of students have received the top grade of D*D*D* the equivalent of three A* at A’ Level, gaining places at distinguished universities to study sport related degrees. Other students achieved excellent grades moving onto universities, continuing to work towards professional sport or securing full-time coaching positions.

BTEC Sport at CHS - FAQs

How many GCSE points are required to study the BTEC Extended Diploma?

This is very much decided on an individual case dependent on school report, academic profile, sporting ability and aspirations. As a guideline we recommend 50 GCSE points.

Can I do the BTEC Extended Diploma and an A Level at CHS?

Unfortunately not. The course requires the same teaching time as three A Levels and with the volume of units and coursework involved, there isa great deal of work for students to complete with just the BTEC Extended Diploma.

Do universities recognise the BTEC qualification?

Universities recognise the BTEC in the similar manner as A Levels. and depends on the university and course which a student wishes to attend and study. Students will be supported in researching appropriate universities and courses.

How is the BTEC Extended Diploma assessed?

Across the 14 units studied, there  are 4 external exams and 10 internally assessed units which may involve a range of presentations, events and assignments.

Additional Options

Now in its third year, our Elite Sport Programme is aimed at students who have genuine aspirations to play elite or professional sport whilst fulfilling their academic potential. We are pleased to say that the ESP has helped to support student-athletes competing both nationally and internationally whilst still having excellent higher education options.

Using a personalised timetable, The ESP allows student-athletes to combine their 3 A Level choices with six additional sporting sessions. Within these sporting sessions they will receive Individual Development Plans that include one-on-one/small group Skill Acquisition & video analysis sessions with our professional sports coaches, Strength & Conditioning sessions with our dedicated S&C staff, and recovery sessions with our professional Yoga coach. This bespoke programme is designed to tie in with other sporting organisations the student-athlete may be linked with to ensure their long term development plan is cohesive & holistic and provides the best environment for them to flourish.

Student-athletes are assigned a mentor who supports them with any pastoral or academic challenges they may face due to the demands of combining training / performing with their progress in the classroom.

Potential students are required to apply for the ESP via the Director of Sport at Gilesheagerty@chschool.co.uk highlighting their sporting success and aspirations along with their academic profile.

**Please see the Elite Sport page for more details.**

Sport Pathway

Through the Sport Pathway, students have an afternoon once every two weeks to explore a variety of different sporting experiences. This may include students who wish to develop their own performance skills; have an interest in video analysis or would like to gain experience of coaching.

In previous years, we have had students take additional sessions with our professional coaches, provide video analysis of first team fixtures, and go to primary schools to assist their delivery of PE and Games.

‘I always wanted to have a career in sport. Although I didn’t want to go to university, the course developed coaching skills and gave me lots of experiences. This preparation certainly helped me gain a full time job in professional coaching’
