Independent Reading Level Assessment
What is IRLA?
What is IRLA (Independent Reading Level Assessment). We utilize IRLA as a formative assessment in the area of reading. This is a tool that we are utilizing in K-5th grade in order to sequence skills and to accelerate reading growth. After giving the assessment, we identify the level and skills in which to focus small group or individual instruction. We utilize the students reading taxonomy levels to form reading groups and to send information home. If you click on the connecting links you can see the skills cards for each of these levels as well as additional resources. After giving the assessment, we identify one essential skill or standard that a student needs to move reading levels. This essential skill is known as a power goal. Below is an image about the reading taxonomy levels from the American Reading Company's website and the grade levels associated with each level.
