Blended Sounds
Focus
These are the following skills and concepts students will be focusing on:
Segmenting and blending up to 5 sounds
Suffix -s added to words with 5 sounds
Suffix -ed,-ing added to unchanging basewords and with closed syllables
Vowel Teams /oa/, .oe/,/ow/, /ou/,/oo/,/ue/,/ew/,/au/ and /aw/
Focus
In the unit we focus on the learning the concept of blending and segmenting 5 sounds with a closed syllable. We also learn about three letter blends.
Helpful Hints
Sometime students struggle with the spelling of certain blends due to similarity of the production of the sounds. Remember to tap out the blends and enunciate each sound.
Additionally we also introduce the suffix ending -ing and ed. A suffix is added to the end of a baseword and change the time which something happens. For example:
squint ed-action that has already happened
squint ing-action that is happening now
Letter-Keyword-Sounds Cards
In this unit students will learn about vowel teams. We do not practice spelling vowel teams but introduce them.
To help your child begin to identify these vowels point them out when reading.

In this unit we are going to continue practicing using punctuation and marking words. We circle sight words, box glued sounds, put a star above bonus letters and underline a base word, circle the suffix box each of the glued sounds, put a breve about short vowels and swoop underneath with a c. Below is an example of a sentence using all of our new sentence markers:
