These are the following skills and concepts students will be focusing on:
Closed syllable concept with short vowels
Closed syllables and open syllables
Vowel team sounds /ai/, /ay/, /ee/, /ea/, /ey/, /oi/, /oy/
Focus
In the unit we focus on the learning the concepts of closed syllables. A closed syllable follows these rules:
Can only have one vowel
Is followed by one or more consonants. Consonants close in the vowel.
The vowel sound is short.
We learn about a new symbol called a breve. A short vowel is marked with a breve.
Letter-Keyword-Sounds Cards
In this unit students will learn about vowel teams. We do not practice spelling vowel teams but introduce them.
To help your child begin to identify these vowels point them out when reading.

Trick Words
Remember many of these words do NOT follow spelling rules and so cannot follow our spelling words procedure. The trick words are:

Sentences
Remember to continue to practice the spelling word procedure when spelling these words. Students should first complete the procedure and then add symbols.
In this unit we are going to continue practicing using punctuation and marking words. We circle sight words, box glued sounds, put a star above bonus letters and underline a base word, circle the suffix box each of the glued sounds, put a breve about short vowels and swoop underneath with a c. Below is an example of a sentence using all of our new sentence markers:

Do not dump that stuff on the bed!
