Foodology

Welcome to the 9th Grade Project-Based Learning Foodology site

Cheltenham High School, Wyncote, PA

During this project, we focused on the health benefits of certain foods and what to eat (or avoid) if you are diagnosed with one of the genetic diseases covered on this site, or how to increase your overall health.

There was a lot that was learned during this assignment. For example, did you know that three ounces of salmon has a little over half the recommended percent of vitamin B3 recommended daily? There is also a lot of information about diseases that we had not heard of prior to this, like MSUD (Maple Syrup Urine Disease). We also learned about the four major biomolecules used in the body, how they are helpful to our bodies, and what foods contain these biomolecules.

We did a lot more than just research things on Google during this assignment. All the groups had 2-3 people make the foods on their websites, documenting this with an instructional cooking video. Not only that but each group had dedicated a page of this website to their topic, which you can visit. Students enrolled in Biology Honors did a more in-depth look at the biomolecules in the food. Their research can be found on each page as well.

This website is a culmination of two months of hard work by the 9th grade cohort of the Project-Based Learning program. Our project began with a virtual cooking demonstration with The Mobile Cooking Teacher (Ms. Keisha Prosser), and recipe reviews from professional nutritionist, Ms. Kelly Bakes of Wayne Nutrition, LLC.
