Introduction
Fragile X syndrome is a genetic disorder which causes intellectual disabilities. Fragile X syndrome is inherited in an X-linked dominant pattern. The average IQ of some with FXS is under 55, while someone without FXS IQ is 80-120. Physical features may include a long and skinny face, large ears, flexible fingers, and large testicles. There is no cure but therapy. During school years, most children benefit from an Individualized Education Plan. Speech, occupational, and physical therapy is recommended to treat learning disabilities. Some medications may be used to treat anxiety and mood disorders. FXS affects both males and females. Females often have milder symptoms than males. The exact number of people who have FXS is unknown, but a research studies estimated that about 1 in 7,000 males and 1 in 11,000 females have been diagnosed with FXS.
