World Languages

The essential intent of the School District of the Chathams is to discover and grow the gifts within each child. The World Language and ESL Department accomplishes this intent by creating global citizens who respect and embrace differences by learning to communicate in another language.

INSTRUCTIONAL OVERVIEW

4-5:

Through reading, writing, listening and speaking, students will become familiar with basic communication in Spanish. An emphasis on repetition, games, interactive activities and songs will quickly create students who are able to communicate in basic Spanish. Students will receive Spanish a minimum of once a week.

6-8:

Through reading, writing, listening, and speaking, students will begin to approach the study of a chosen world language on an academic level. An emphasis on speaking proficiency ensures students are strong communicators of their chosen language. Geography and history serve to provide students with important cultural connections. Students will receive world language as an academic period in their regular schedule.

9-12:

Building off of their middle school experience, students will expand their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in their chosen language. Higher level coursework will allow students to expand their learning further into cultural elements, including art, music, history and travel. Students will receive world language as an academic period in their regular schedule.
