Mathematics

The essential intent of the mathematics department is to create learning opportunities which empower students to make meaning of concepts, share their thinking, apply their mathematical knowledge and experience the power of using skills to solve problems.

INSTRUCTIONAL OVERVIEW

K-5:

The mathematics program with the School District of the Chathams teaches students the tools to be problem solvers. In addition to acquiring skills, we strive to build procedural fluency, number sense, and a curiosity of how math is seen and used outside the classroom. Students will be given tasks or activities that develop and reinforce the mathematical practices as well.

6-8:

Students enter middle school with a foundation of skills learned through our K-5 program. They will continue to build on these skills while developing more conceptual and abstract thinking in preparation for Algebra. Students will be exposed to how many of the concepts they study are used to solve real-world problems.

9-12:

The mathematics program at the high school creates curious thinkers as students progress into more abstract thinking. Sharing different strategies and seeing the purpose of the content helps students make meaning of the abstract content. There will be a balance between skill acquisition and application of content.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

K-5:

  • New material will be introduced through both a video and teacher-led lesson.

  • Students will engage in discussion and work independently to practice the new skill and develop a procedural fluency.

  • Students will be expected to practice their math facts regularly.

  • Through both student driven questions and formative assessment, teachers can monitor how students are doing with each concept.

6-8:

  • Students will receive their assignments through Google Classroom.

  • Lessons will be introduced through either a video format or teacher lesson.

  • Students should ask questions or seek teacher support if they do not understand the content.

  • There will be formative assessment checks throughout the unit to help inform teachers as to both class and individual understanding of the material.

  • Students will be assessed through various measures including , but not limited to, the Big Ideas or Discovery Education resources, FlipGrid, Desmos, Google Slides, and Google Meets.
