Social Studies challenges students to use the skills and habits of historians and social scientists to better understand and shape their lives and their world.

INSTRUCTIONAL OVERVIEW

K-5

Through reading, watching, and listening, about themselves, their families, their communities and other communities across the country and around the world, students of the School District of the Chathams think, talk, write, and draw to explore how people live their lives as individuals and in groups.

4-5

Through reading, watching, and listening, about themselves, their families, their communities and other communities across the country, Students of the School District of the Chathams think, talk, write, and draw to explore how people live their lives as individuals and in groups. 4th graders survey different regions of the United States through the eyes of social scientists while 5th graders explore the early history of the United States.

6-8

Social Studies will continue to challenge students to use the skills and habits of historians and social scientists to better understand and shape their lives and their world. Teachers will lead students through learning experiences to exercise and develop those skills while moving through the content of each course, using Google classroom sites as the home base for all information, resources and communication regarding each class. Students will find all of the instructional materials for the class, including readings, document collections, audio recordings and videos, as well as the class schedule, announcements, lesson and project directions, forum discussions, and links to online meetings in Google Classroom.

9-12

Social Studies will continue to challenge students to use the skills and habits of historians and social scientists to better understand and shape their lives and their world. Teachers will continue to lead students through learning experiences to exercise and develop those skills while moving through the content of each course, using Schoology class sites as the primary location for all information, resources and communication regarding each class. Students will find copies of or links to all instructional materials including readings, document collections, audio recordings and videos, organized in the Schoology class site, as well as the class schedule, announcements, lesson and project directions, forum discussions, and links to online meetings. Any additional educational technology tools or outside resources will also be linked through the Schoology Class sites.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

K-5

Lesson introductions and source material will be provided to students through self-contained, individual slideshow-based lessons in Google Classroom that contain every element necessary to complete the lesson and submit student work.

  • Lessons posted in Google Classroom will include lesson and activity introductions, explanations and directions along with readings, videos and materials students need for the lesson.

  • Teachers may meet with students in small groups in Google Meet.

  • Some students may submit work by moving images and writing in designated text boxes within Google Slide lessons, while others may write in Google Docs or shares thoughts and ideas through videos on FlipGrid.

6-8

Students will write and draw in Google Docs and Slides and share thoughts, ideas and questions in Google Meets and shared FlipGrid videos.

  • Weekly introductions posted by teachers in Google Classroom will communicate expectations and objectives for the upcoming week's learning, placing learning in the context of the the current unit and the overall course .

  • Readings, videos and materials students need for each lesson or activity will be available in Google Classroom or linked to outside resources from Google Classroom.

  • Teachers will schedule Google Meets with students in various groups for different periods of time within scheduled class time to accommodate specific lessons, group work, focused discussions and student needs.

  • Some students may submit work through Google Docs, Slides or shared thoughts and ideas videos on FlipGrid or other platforms.

  • Teachers will assess student performance and progress in all of the activities of the course.

9-12

Students are expected to invest their interest and energy in their history and social studies courses because their individual success and the collective learning experience of all students is built on active participation. Students who break out of the mold of passive learning in the classroom by suggesting answers, asking questions, and being active in online-meetings and discussion forums will find their risk-taking and independence rewarded with greater growth in the remote learning environment.

  • Teachers will communicate expectations and objectives for lessons readings, and instructional activities in Schoology, placing learning in the context of the the current unit and the overall course.

  • Teachers will schedule Google Meets with students in various groups for different periods of time within scheduled class time to accommodate specific lessons, group work, focused discussions and student needs.

  • Students are expected to attend and actively participate in all scheduled online class sessions.

  • Some students may submit work through Google Docs, Slides or shares thoughts and ideas videos on FlipGrid or other platforms.

  • Teachers will assess student performance and progress in all of the activities of the course.
