Easily Suede

This is a suede keychain that I had to raster(engrave) a logo of my choice onto.

This is the image of the keychain after importing it into CorelDraw. I had to take a screenshot of the image because the original photos file was not compatible with CorelDraw.

To create a outline of the keychain I needed to trace the image and turn it into a bitmap. With adjusting features like detail, smoothing, corner smoothness, and color type(grey scale, black and white).

Using these tools I created an image that I can trace using a 2-point line that connects nodes together to create an outline of the keychain, the purpose of the outline is to fit the suede keychain into a templet so that we can raster the logo with the keychain being in a perfect position. I choose the Virginia Tech logo because it's my favorite college and most of my family went to Virginia Tech.

This is the final design, the one before was too small and the keychain could not fit in the hole that was made and the logo needed to be turned black

This is the final design of the keychain placed on the templet. I was number 13 and to make it fit I had to rotate it 180 degrees. I had to create a new layer on the templet because the layer with the outline was locked so I could not edit it and you can select if each layer cuts so I made my layer and put my keychain in the 13th box and then made it so that it would not cut the templet and just my keychain.

Bo, Jay, Jed, and Ryan's First Practice LASER Cut Time Lapse.MOV

This is the video of the first stage of my keychain. The hole left by the cut was too small for the suede keychain to fit so I had to resize it and create my final design.

This is the hole that the first cut left and the piece of cardboard that fits in the hole.

This shows the suede keychain trying to fit into the whole but is so big. The reason I could not of just shoved it in is because it would mess up the y axis of the laser when trying to engrave the piece of suede.

This image shows the hole left by my final design and the suede keychain fits perfectly. On the right of the image, there is a failed cut. It failed because I didn't put the cardboard all the way in the corner so it cut off the top and would pf cut off the side.

This is keychain that was cut from the photo to the left. It has the Virginia Tech logo placed in the middle and

This is a video of my keychain cutting on the final templet that everyone else in the class used. To optimize time I cut with a few of my peers.

This shows the suede keychain fitting into my keychain's hole as number 13. This is the final stage before rastering(engraving) the suede keychain with the Virginia Tech logo.
