Corel Box

Laser cutting a Corel Drawing:

Corel is a powerful CAD program, with lots of different tools and options. To go about learning how to use it, our teacher guided us through building a box in order to make sure we understood how it worked. Working with Corel can be tricky at first, but as you get the hang of it there are many shortcuts and workarounds to save time and design better.



We were able to make our design into something tangible by cutting it on a laser cutter, which which produced 5 very precise, accurate rectangles we could assemble into the box you see here. There were very specific guidelines to follow on the laser cutter, outlined here.


It was very important that we followed these instructions. If we didn't our print would not work out. In fact, the first time I tried it, the laser did not cut the cardboard all the way through, because I had mixed up some of the settings. When I realized my mistake, I stopped the program, reset it, and adjusted the settings so that the second time, it cut all the way through. Once it had cut all the way through it was easy to assemble into this highly useful box displayed above.
