Zones of Regulation (ZOR) is a proactive and systematic approach to emotion self-regulation. ZOR allows individuals to think about their feelings and actions they can take to self-regulate if they are feeling uncomfortable or want to maintain their current emotional state. ZOR is not a behavior management system or discipline model.
"It’s critically important that we don’t convey the message that the Green Zone is the only acceptable Zone to be in. Acknowledge, accept, and support these feelings, never make anyone feel like the Green Zone is the norm." - Zones of Regulation
What it is:
A proactive, skills based approach
A simple, common language to understand, talk about, and teach regulation
A consistent, metacognitive pathway to follow for regulation
A systematic framework with a developmental sequence of lessons
Meant to be adapted for your learners and settings
What it isn't:
A behavior approach
A discipline model, punitive in nature
A scripted curriulum with different lessons for each age/grade level
Only about teaching the 4 Zones and feelings associated with them
Teaching kids emotion self-regulation is important for helping them cope in varying situations. The Zones of Regulation framework is research based and developed for elementary and early learners. The Zones of Regulation website offers support, additional training, etc.!
