South Carolina Law
Regulation 43-241 says that students who cannot attend public school because of illness, accident, or pregnancy (with complicating or extenuating medical conditions), even with the aid of transportation, are eligible for medical homebound or hospitalized instruction. A physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant must certify that the student is unable to attend school but may profit from instruction given in the home or hospital. Any student participating in a medical homebound instruction or hospitalized instruction must be approved by the superintendent or his or her designee on standardized forms provided by the South Carolina Department of Education.
Nurse Verification
Will only need to be completed on an “as needed basis”
Diagnoses that entitle students to receive medical homebound instruction include accident victims, surgery, extended illness (ex: sickle cell or cystic fibrosis) and pregnancy. This is also applicable during the postpartum period. Normal pregnancy may not reflect the need of homebound services unless there are complicating or extenuating medical conditions.
The nurse verification form must be completed for all anxiety, mental health, stomach/gastro-intestinal, and cardiac diagnoses.
Discontinuation of Homebound Timesheets
Teachers will be solely responsible for using Kronos to log HB hours.
MHI Instruction Log will need to be completed and include all signatures before being submitted.
